Securities and Exchange Commission to issue new rules on corp CEO pay disclosure

Currently, publicly traded companies are required to disclose to shareholders the total compensation of their CEO along with their other top executives. The Securities and Exchange Commission is set to issue additional disclosure rules regarding the pay of a company's top executive.

quote:

WASHINGTON—The Securities and Exchange Commission will soon thrust CEO compensation back into the spotlight when it proposes a long-delayed rule requiring companies to disclose the pay gap between chief executives and rank-and-file employees.

The requirement, a mandate of the 2010 Dodd-Frank financial law, could put added pressure on corporate boards to slow pay increases for chief executives at companies with significant or growing gaps, proponents say.

Companies would have to disclose the ratio between CEO compensation and the median pay of the sampled employee group. Median pay is the point on the income scale at which half the employees earn more and half earn less.

LINK
My prediction is this is the first step towards the federal government setting the allowable compensation amount for corporations.

More incentive for companies to stay private.

If it happens naturally within the market that's one thing but to force it to happen is a horrible decision.

The market doesn't do crap unless forced by regulations. Proof is that Wall Street would hold us by the cajones if they are not restrained

I don't think CEO pay should be reduced. It's a very very small group of people world wide who are qualified to run these companies and manage the CEO's duties. They deserve the pay they get. Also if you just cut their pay what stops them from just quitting. If I made 4 mill last year and this year they limit me to making 500k i'm probably not going to put up with the headaches for that much money.

My prediction if they try to set a ratio between executive and median pay: Lower skilled labor will more rapidely be automated.

screw 'em...as long as i'm getting satisfactory pay, i really don't care what my bosses make.

The more they make, the happier they are and that tends to roll downhill...they want me to be happier too, so better compensation for me.

good thing. The quicker we get out of the mindset that everyone needs to have a job for a productive society the better.

One of the reasons why CEO and top officers pay is so high is because it is used to push other employees to strive for advancements. The high pay benefits more than just the CEO...

yeah paying the CEO 1000x the rank and file makes the mail room guy just overjoyed. Like the chickens rooting for the Colonel.

My guess is the CEO is more than 1,000 times as valuable to increasing stockholder's value than the mail room guy.

Maybe the mail room guy should better his skills so he can do something besides sort mail?

I just don't see why it matters what the mailroom guy is paid vs what the CEO is paid. Those jobs have wildly different expectations from the person holding the position.

Why do you want to interfere in the decisions of the owners of the company, who are private citizens?

What moral and intellectual superiority do you have that would make your choice better than theirs?

Agree 100%...

Lets pay the people who shape the direction and success of a company the same as college drop outs or the likes. No reason to give incentive for anyone to move up and make a difference
