For the past decade we have been spoiled due to our program being a top tier. We have been consistently dominate with a down year here and there (which is normal for a top team).

For those of you in your 40's and older, you are well aware of the decades of 2nd tier football. From the 60's to the 90's, we had trouble getting over the hump. A 9-3 season, with losses to Florida, Auburn and Georgia was considered a great year, and we had quite a few of those.

My question is; Have we forever shed the image of a 2nd tier program? And do you think we could ever slide back to decades of average football and celebrating a 9-3 season? Your thoughts?

Look at the football teams record for the 60s, 70s, 80s, and 90s. 9-3 was considered GREAT for most of that time.

Yes, we're spoiled, but once you get hooked on really winning, it's tough to accept even one-loss seasons.

Sure, it could all go away, hopefully it won't.

Every program has its ups and downs. So there will be a day things dip and when it does I hope I'm not alive.

Hell yes, we can backslide. It isn't programs that succeed; it's people. Hire Sabans and Miles, and you will succeed. Hire Dinardos and Archers, and you will backslide.

No they were not great. Expectations have always been high but between Arnsparger and Saban were pretty disappointing. LSU would slip in some "very quality" wins in once and a while to keep your hopes up.

Um...Ole Miss, believe it or not, was once a national power. Look at them now. (Also, see Notre Same). In sum...yes...you can and probably will backslide at some point. Enjoy it while we are here.

Hey, Arnsparger never won 10 games. 8-3-1, 9-2-1, 9-3. He also went 0-3 in bowls.

Saban also lost at least 3 games every season but one.

Yet we glorify both guys. In the meantime, we rag on the one guy who consistently wins 10 or more games a year.

All part of the wonderful weirdness that is LSU football.

I think they have too....now that there is so much money invested in the program they need to fill TS every season....I know a lot of people bitch about the cost of going to games but the facilities today compared to just 10 years ago are night and day....my first year as a season ticket holder (2000) I paid $1,000 for four tickets now I pay $3,250 for the same seats....I don't know if I could do it if we get another Curly Hallman......

It's weird you post this because I pondered this question on the way home from work. I thought about all the kids in High School now only know of LSU being top tier. Most kids in college probably have zero recollection of our average years in the late 90's.

This all made me think of how spoiled we have been lately. Miles wins. He doesn't always do it how I like it but with a new OC we may be on this level for as long as we can keep all of them. It won't be until the mid 2020's that we may have issues.

The most important moment in LSU football history was Emmert spending money.

That includes buying Saban at $1.6 mil a year (unproven, but paid #3 salary in 2000 for potential) and capital investments.

Some other programs had already done so, and many many many more have followed, but that was the defining moment.

Joe Dean never invested in the program. He was short game, low expenses, make a profit, go home. He cost LSU the 90s.

LSU football may have ebbs and flows in the future, but I do believe they've learned the lesson that investment will reap dividends. I still think LSU bought low on Miles in 2005, but he's proven to keep the program at a high level.

I just hope that if Miles retires, moves on, the AD doesn't go back to pinching pennies.

This is ridiculous. I swear some people have no perspective.

Arnsparger: 11 games, won 8. 11 games won 9. 11 games won 9. If you want to postseason it, then yes he was 0-3. But Les has now lost 3 of 4 in postseason.

Saban: Took over a program that had won 7 games, yes 7 fricking games in the last 2 seasons. 7-15 record. Yep, you read that right, 7 wins in 22 games. First season, 8-4. 2nd season, SEC, Sugar Bowl win. 3rd season, 6-1, Mauck injured whooping UF @ the Swamp (when had LSU done that prior?), 4th season SEC and BCSNC. OMG, he lost 3 games every year, the pos coach.

I absolutely hate revisionists and throwing out stats that are meaningless. Even Saban from 2000-2004 only had 2 12 game schedules, which since 2005 is the norm.

I'm not taking away from Miles, but you can't say Ansparger never won 10 games or Saban lost 3 games a year with a straight face unless you are breakfast retarded.

IMO yes we have shed the image of a 2nd tier SEC program. kids in high school have only seen LSU as a powerhouse.

I have followed LSU for almost 40 years now. Never in my lifetime did I ever anticipate the success that LSU has achieved over the last 12 seasons or so. The mentality is 180 degrees from what it was before Saban was hired. Yes, a 3 loss season and a bowl game was considered a successfull season from the mid-70's until the late 90's. Back then I hoped to win but did not expect it every weekend. Now I expect to win every Saturday. So I know my mentality as an LSU fan has changed completely. I sometimes have to pinch myself when LSU is mentioned as one of the elite programs in the nation.

Look at Texas. They are on the downhill slide right now. LSU is fortunate that we are the dominant football school in the state regardless. LSU has won more football games than everyone with the exception of Boise State since 2005.

Yes we are top tier. The good news is Saban put a system in place to keep us here. Miles has built on it. As long as we keep solid coaching (and more importantly recruiting) we can stay here for a long time.
