Lost Letterman: SI is the Real Story, Not Oklahoma St.

........While both of those controversies have since blown over, Sports Illustrated has just staked its future on the Oklahoma State exposé, which was penned by George Dohrmann (with reporting from Evans). Far surpassing the depth and breadth of the Ohio State and LSU stories, it accuses the Cowboys football program of paying players, sham jobs, ignoring players who dealt and used drugs and sex with recruiting hostesses from 2001-11. In other words: The Mother Load of College Football Scandals, right up there with the Nevin Shapiro fiasco at Miami (FL). But don’t be fooled: Sports Illustrated has a lot more riding on the accuracy of this series than Oklahoma State’s football program. Even if SI is 100% accurate, who knows if Oklahoma State will even be punished by the NCAA at all considering the way the Shapiro investigation has been botched (two years and counting since Yahoo! broke the story…) and the slap on the wrist Oregon received for the Willie Lyles scandal. On the other hand, the stakes couldn’t be higher for SI as controversy swirls around the series; this is how SI has bet it all on its journalistic integrity.

you state as fact that the miami situation and the oregon situation are the exact same case details as okie lite (oh ad ohio state also). all offenses are not created equal and must be judged on their own merit or lack thereof. imo, your reporting should constitute you being qualified to work for SI.

SI has had it in for LSU since the "Crazy Days at LSU" Cover story on Dale Brown, where they took a positive story and turned it into a negative.

Thayer Evans is screwed.
SI will live thanks to SI Swimsuit, but their integrity is completely gone in my eyes and the eyes of milions.

SI has pinned it's journalistic integrity on this guy? Feel free to caption.

If you notice on todays piece ("The Sex") there is a third writer credited, Meissa Segura. I have a strong suspicion that she was called in to do a lot of cleanup. The story wasn't published until approximately 12:00 CDT, even though SI tweeted that it would come out in the morning.
The piece does not make any true accusations, nor does it implicate any player, coach, recruit, or Orange Pride member. There are no quoted sources that say for a fact that hostesses had sex with recruits by request of the coaches or any Athletic Department staff. In fact, the story repeatedly reminds the reader that no one had been implicated, and goes on to quote many OSU staff and former Orange Pride members who all confirm that this was strictly against the rules and they were reminded of it by everyone.
This sounds like a major attempt to cover their arse, and if so, it is a shame that another reporter had to come clean up the mess and then attribute her name (and reputation) to the story.

The Sex is currently not on ESPN's website. Hmmmm?

Now let me see if I get it right about the SI Story.....
College kids smoke weed
College kids get laid
College kids loaf on their summer jobs
Some walk ons eventually get cut from the team
ANd no evidence the coaches knew anything about it.....except the cut walk ons who could not play...
WTF????

Unfortunately this is very unlikely. No one outside of Oklahoma, Louisiana, and maybe a handful of fans from other Big 12 or SEC fanbases had the attention span or interest to follow this dud for 5 days.
Their opinions were formed the moment they saw the first headline and most probably didn't bother to read the whole story to begin with, much less keep up with the minimal coverage that ESPN has done in contradicting the article.
This ends with a whimper, not a bang, and Tiger and OSU fans are the only ones who will remember this in a few weeks anyway.
frick it, Kent State up next, with 5 SEC foes on deck. :fearthehat:

Not even sure the NCAA has the man power to cover all the shite hitting the fan right now. My bet is nothing happens cuz they can't spare the investigators...LOL! I'm sure there's an ad for NCAA investigators on Monster.com. Think I'll go apply.....
