Nichols is a fifty minute drive from the fine HBCU with a 5% graduation rate SUNO. Grambling is minutes away from ULM, Southern is minutes away from LSU and BRCC.

Public institutions don't have rights.

All of the politically connected family members on the staff at SUNO would disagree, and did so last year to avoid consolidation with UNO.

SUNO needs to be consolidated with UNO, but politically, that's going to be difficult as long as the old guard is still alive. Maybe a generation from now, it will be doable since younger Black folks aren't as sensitive to these things as older Blacks. Folks from my parents' generation and some from my generation, would accuse me of blasphemy if they heard me say it, but some HBCU's need to go the way of Negro League baseball.

I never got this.

People have this fight against the fire-hoses, dogs, bricks, baseball bats and guys in the white hoods to end segregation, then the same people fight to hold on to a segregated institution.

Old guard? Odd description of the political block pushing to keep SUNO in place.

Some people think progress should be a one-way street, but it's a two-way street. Some of the same people who cheered when Herb Tyler was named LSU's starting quarterback weren't so happy when Marcus Jacoby was named Southern's starting quarterback. If Ole Miss can have a Black homecoming queen, it shouldn't be a big deal when Hampton has a White homecoming queen. And if a country which is 72% White can elect a Black President, it should be no surprise that New Orleans, which is 60% Black, would elect a White mayor.

How could that work? Does UNO lower its admission standards or do 93% of the SUNO students transfer to Nunez or Delgado?

People on here who are claiming - "this is a private organization they can do whatever they want" - are either racist or obtuse.

This isn't some backyard women haters club run by Alfalfa.

THIS IS A UNIVERSITY SUPPORTED - UNIVERSITY AFFILIATED - UNIVERSITY GOVERNED - UNIVERSITY FUNDED (to a degree) - UNIVERSITY APPROVED...(to become a colony/chapter active members or transfers petition the Alabama Dean of Students.)

To EVEN EXIST as a "private club" - All sorority Chapters must be registered with and officially recognized by the University of Alabama.

That's endorsement.

Are you implying that it's one sided?

And black colleges aren't going away anytime soon. If blacks in the past were allowed admission to schools like LSU, then they wouldn't exist.

They can remove the racist alums from their positions as chapter advisers and whatnot, and put some women in their place who are ready to live in the 21st century. I expect them to do so. The Nationals really don't like bad publicity like this-Greeks get enough of it as there is. And this is simply not an issue in most of the country. The UA chapters will have to get with the program.

And for the record, I'm a Greek alum. It's long past time for shite like this to end.

This

The whole issue here is not whether the houses are on state land (except for the UA employee). The issue here is alums that need to step into the 21st century.

I'm an alum of one of the largest sororities on LSU's campus. I'm glad my national organization is not one embarrassed by this crap, and I hope we're doing it better.

There is two campuses of one particularly funny HBCU The U of the Virgin Islands which is fifty odd years old on two islands with black majorities population wise. The islands govt. is the biggest CF there is to be found. When one Senator was voted out of office in '92 he removed everything from the offices of his replacement down to the light bulbs with the explanation that the newbie had "won the office".

LSU's track record is not better.

I have a friend who dropped out of her sorority there for several reasons - one being that the alums would not let them extend a bid to a hispanic girl because they "weren't ready for that kind of diversity." This was just a few years ago.

I believe you and I'm sorry to hear that. The alums in charge now are probably my age. They should be better than this.

I'm not sure what's the best way to go about this, but Tennessee already gave us a roadmap on how this can be done when it merged Tennessee State University and the University of Tennessee at Nashville in 1979. Where there's a will there's a way if both sides are willing to give a little. It made absolutely no sense to open up an Auburn University campus in Montgomery in 1967 when a public HBCU had already existed there for 100 years. Similarly, it made no sense to start a University of Alabama campus in Huntsville in 1969 when an HBCU had existed there for almost 100 years. It only took the folks in Tennessee eleven years to correct their error, how long will it take the folks in Alabama to do likewise?

I haven't read the thread but if it's a private club, they can do whatever they want and if it receives money, then it's part of a whole messed up system in the first place and the idea that this is anywhere near the most egregious thing that happens in that system is a joke.

Cmon BHP you are smarter than this.

This was organic change: a group of young white girls--without being forced--wanted to include a black girl in their organization.

The only thing inorganic about this situation was the university official intervening.
