I wonder why that is?

Homogenized culture. 99.9% white people. High taxes but everyone gets the benefits in return - no one is leeching off the government. Basically, the complete opposite of the United States.

My grandpa went to Belgium, said everyone loves it.

BUT like you said, no leeching. It's the perfect society if everyone cooperates

re: The World's Happiest Nations: Denmark No. 1

I watched a TED talk a while ago that posited that the reason for America's relative unhappiness was the extremely high expectations of the people bolstered in part by the incredible amount of choices that we as a people have. We expect everything to be a perfect fit. We expect ourselves to rise up to some greatness. And when things don't work out quite as well as we have become wont to expect, we get depressed. Our own affluence is the very source of our great depression. Interestin stuff, I think.

It's exactly right. You know who first said this? Alexis de Tocqueville in his "Democracy in America".

The key to happiness is lowered expectations.

To be fair, they have quite a dark history in their short time as a nation.

Of course it isn't us. We are fat. Fat people aren't happy and the skinny people are pissed at the fat people for being fat.

Despite most things being efficient and properly organized over there, Germans will always have something to bitch about.

We works the most hours among first world countries.

Less federal holidays and less vacation times. there is no federal law requiring employers to give vacations to employees. Your mileage may vary on vacations, some might get 5 weeks and some might get 0 even on a full time job.

This...so much freaking this.

There's too many cultural variables in the United States because of the mass melting pot it is, to have straight up socialistic government work properly.

Food Stamps, Welfare, etc... You have 20% of the people footing 80% of the bill.

Not to mention the amount of illegals taking out of the system, but not putting back into it.

The only place in Europe I would visit again and again. Very kind, generous people. Speak English fluently. No downside whatsoever.

Bingo.

The "Nordic model" works incredibly well in Scandinavia. You pay high taxes but know that you'll see the benefits that result from doing so. For the most part, people have the same views on how society should function and the idea of a "welfare queen" is mind boggling.

There has been an increase in Muslim immigrants in the last decade, however, and that is beginning to cause some cultural issues. I'm speaking mainly about Sweden and Denmark, as I don't have nearly as much first hand experience when it comes to Norway.
