PT's "non" first down...

Hopefully Payton is smarter with the challenges in the future. He should have had our people looking at the play during the measuring.

Well, the yellow line isn't official.

But that ref spotted the ball a full yard behind where the ball hit.

Just a chicken shite spot.

besides this tho IMO he should not have used the timeout during the easy kick.. just take the 5 yard penalty if you want to try to draw offsides.

I blame Payton and whoever he relies on up in the booth to tell him when to challenge.

That was basically a turnover.

Booth guy needs to be fired.

how does the rule book read on spot challenges? what "standard of evidence" is required? Is it similar to the turnover standard? Either way, I think this is one Payton will be looking at and wishing he had back.

Seems to me like the lazy refs always just mark the ball about a yard short of where the player lands on the play like they're assuming they slid forward after they went down. I watch as many games as I can on Sundays and it happens in every game. They need to pay more attention spotting the ball

It was an obvious first down and I thought so at the time. I'm pretty sure you can challenge the spot, and this one was way off.

I was screaming "why is the ref fricking drifting back" as he was walking to spot the ball.

I think they get it right most of the time, but that was a terrible fricking spot.

That was a definitely a bad no challenge and an even worse spot by the refs

On the national TV coverage at least (I live in Dallas now) they never showed a replay. I am not sure the booth guys had anything to look at.

I don't know if I've ever seen as much second guessing after a win.

I guess that means there's room for improvement.

He lost control of the ball and recovered it where it was finally spotted.

All of this. I still don't know why he didn't challenge. All's well that ends well, though.

This. I was upset because they weren't showing a replay in time. The booth guys for the Saints see the same replay we see, so if the replay is non existent or late, they cannot communicate with Payton in time to throw the challenge flag.

Had Payton gotten the opportunity to challenge, the replay would've clearly shown that Pierre's knee was not down, in fact, his knee was on the Atlanta defender as he stretched for the First Down.
