Money board what is your thoughts on a good small business for say anywhere between 10-20K on up to about 75K startup cost?

Personally I have always thought that service types of businesses (Pest control, Tree stump removal, roofing, etc.,) are always good if you're willing to do it right. What are some others that may be pretty decent?

Neither of those are bad ideas at all, but I'm thinking more along the lines of something you could make a decent living at.

I know that with lawn service it is certainly possible if you do a great job, meet the right connections for commercial jobs, etc.. However that has to be a tough one to really break into because every other person I know seems to be in the lawn care business or has a family member who is.

A mobile detailer got in good with the receptionists at my building and they email the entire office the day before they are coming. The next day people come in and leave their keys at the front desk. Like $35 a pop with interior wipe.

They are raking it in

Blows my mind

I put down 30k on a 150k rental property. I pocket about 6k per year after I pay the mortgage taxes and insurance. Maint is running about $1500 so I clear $4500 on 30k.

Pay phones are making a comeback ......for that kinda scratch ,I would look in buying a vending route with machine in place or a small laundromat ( location is key with this) good luck and let us know what you decided

$35 isn't a car detail. It's a glorified car wash.

The problems with these are that you live and die by weather. Also, here in the South, they are both seasonal and you MUST diversify.

Lawn service is probably the most competitive small business in the U.S. You will never do it differently, only cheaper or more of it. The most successful lawn services I know buy other lawn service's out, including their contracts. The good thing is a bad thing, lawn service is extreme physical labor so there are always guys/companies wanting to get out of it.

Mobile detailing has been a disaster for anyone I know thats done it. There are hardly ever any contracts and it is a lot of leg work cold-calling or door-to-door selling. A lot of companies are now considering this solicitation and prevent it. Also, a vast majority of the population out there view detailing as overpriced. For those who do value detailing... its sub par. As a car guy, I think there is no way a mobile detail is equal to an in-shop, garaged, controlled environment detail job. IMO, the only way to get into mobile detailing is via mobile mechanic work with fleets (contracts).

I think lawn service is a good idea. I have a friend that is really successful in the lawn buisness. You just have to get out and find jobs and learn how to price yards so you can profit from them.
