Let's say a booster club tells a coach if they reach the playoffs they will get paid a "bonus" from the funds the club raised.

Is this allowed? Legally?

I know some coaches get a supplemental payment from the boosters and there is no issue with it. I'm not sure about performance bonuses.

Why wouldn't it be allowed legally? As long as those clubs dont get any state money, they should be able to do whatever they want with the funds they raise.

The problem I have with it is this: How much pressure do you think the coach will have on him to play the booster club's kids, regardless of how good they are?

depends on what kind of coach you have. he may also be willing to play relatives in the same manner.

If the bonuses are based on success, I would imagine the pressure would be the opposite.

I agree with this.

Regardless, it's bad practice. The coach is under contract to win - that should be enough. Booster programs should be assigned to provide help with concessions, hospitality areas, spirit packs (extra clothing), etc.

The coach's income should have nothing to do with that. But, you'll still see the coach's "wives" get gift cards after the season is over.

A Bama fan saying booster groups shouldn't be throwing around extra money. I have seen it all now.

Trust me...booster clubs don't give $100 handshakes to coaches who lose.

Think of it as a cash incentive plan. A capitalistic island in a sea of socialism (all teachers basically make the same, regardless of their quality of subject area).

I think it's the reverse in some cases. Need to win so bad they stop trying to please parents.

This is false. Football coaches are working 7 days a week from sun up to sun down. If they make it to the state championship, thats 5 extra weeks of work. During the summer, they are working close to 5 days a week. There is absolutely nothing wrong with giving coaches a little well earned incentive at the end of a very successful and tiresome football season.

Isn't he technically under contract to teach?

Say a public high school is looking for a new coach. A hot up and coming coach is willing to come but has other offers from public schools . There is nothing wrong whatsoever with the booster club ponying up extra $$ to hire a better coach......

or they can do like Neville's does and give the coach his own car...
