Hey guys,

I know they got some kayak fishermen on here so I figured this would be a good place to go.

I recently went on a amazing yak trip out to some rigs and caught a few really nice reds, so I'm hooked. We went out with a few buddies and did it kind ghetto, with cheap kayaks and minimal gear, but still had a blast.

I want to take my dad out on a similar trip maybe even further out, but would need to be much more organized. Leaving from grand isle or near. Could be a fully guided or just a mothership setup..

Who would be a good guide or service to call? And what good online resources do you guys have to research more?

Thanks in advance!

How "ghetto" did you go? Price & brand?

I'm getting the itch to try kayaking myself, but I don't want to drop a lot of money in case I don't like it or I physically can't (old shoulder/elbow injury).

Did you paddle from shore to the rigs? About how far was it?

Wondering the same.

It's awesome, definitely one of my favorite things. I use a Wilderness Systems, which was a bit more than I wanted to have spent on a kayak, but I love it. I use it for fishing and for recreational purpose as well. A lot of people on here use Ascend, which is an awesome kayak, especially for the price. You can get one for $400-$500, and it'll last you.

Danny Wray of Calmwater Charters is the kayak guide on GI. I doubt he would help you go out to a rig though. Better have your shite together and a plan in case seas kick up.

Don't give up on it if it hurts for the first few paddles. I got my first kayak a few months after going over the handlebars of my mountain bike. I had bilateral radial head fractures in both arms. It hurt like hell he first few paddles and I could hear the bones cracking and popping as I paddled. I thought I had wasted money on the kayak it hurt so bad. It took 3-4 weeks and the pain went away.

I also have a right shoulder with a torn rotator cuff, calcific tendnitiois and bursitis. I've had to alter my paddle stroke to a lower angle stroke during longer paddles, but usually have no issues on shorter paddles unless the conditions are rough and I'm doing a lot of bracing which puts more pressure on the shoulder.

I'm having surgery on the 26th to have the shoulder repaired and the calcium deposits cleaned up a bit. Will be 6 months before I can get back in the yak.

i have the $500 one from academy and have no complaints. i stand up and fish with it in the marsh and have no problem fighting decent sized reds on it while standing

Sorry slow to reply...

5 of us went out. One had a kayak of his own, the rest of us rented some cheap kayaks 20$ for a day, 3 sit on tops which had slow leaks and began to really sag when we were coming back. I was in a sit in without a skirt that was starting to get significant water inside by the end.
Then our fishing rigs...I had one rod that was able to handle the fish, and my buddy had one. Other than that we were catching big bull reds and drum on light trout lines.

We paddled about 2.5 miles out and it got pretty hairy coming back in. I would recommend being a little smarter about it than that! haha

1) Set up an account with Photobucket.com to upload your pics. (there are a couple other sites that tigerdroppings accepts)

2) Upload your pic

3) Copy the Image link for your picture by clicking of the link (you'll figure it out once you get into it)

4) Paste the Image link into your tigerdroppings/Outdoor Board post.

Picture is posted. Kind of a pain in the arse, but it is what it is.
