re: Anyone coach little league sports? I was approached by a guy I play ball with,

I've coached youth sports for years. Seven years of baseball from t-ball to 11&12, three years of soccer from U6 to U8, four years of football from sophomore(1st & 2nd grade) to the current season where I'm coaching senior (6th & 7th grade). Here is what I've seen.

Cons
1. Parents. Some are great and helpful, others you will have to keep from beating to a pulp. Some will be glad to help, others think you're their baby sitter. Some will bitch no matter what and some will try to hurt you for the most petty of reasons.

2. It's mostly a thankless job. If you really care about your players, you'll spend hours training and studying whatever sport you're coaching so you can better teach your kids. Along with this you'll spend hours coming up with line-ups, practice plans, and figuring out who fits where that gives them the best chance to succeed and help their team. Very few will recognize any of this and instead figure the only time you have to devote to coaching is just at practice and games.

Pros
1. The kids. If you're in it for the right reasons you will measure your success as a youth coach not in wins and losses. Instead you will measure it by the development of your kids. What you should look for is first that they have fun, learn the fundamentals of the game, learn teamwork, learn to always give 100% effort, and learn good sportsmanship. If you do these things, winning and losing will take care of themselves. The greatest reward or recognition a youth coach can have is to see a big smile on a kids face after that kid accomplished something they never thought they could that you taught them how to do.

Can't wait til my little man can play basketball. I will implement some fun offenses for the kids to run. My little boy wants to play right now. He dribbles and shoots really well for his age but isn't old enough yet. Hopefully he continues to enjoy it as much as he does now and he just gets better.

As far as coaching, I think with all the travel baseball ect. I think I wont coach him much in that but I will work with him alot. Basketball I will coach him. I have some deep roots in the basketball game(as well as the other sports, but this is where I can help the kids most) I coached there tee-ball and coach pitch team, but I think I may have 1 more year of that before it gets a little too serious.

The better kids will show and you wont have to be out there coaching on the field for you kid as he knows he can showcase the talents on his own. Just have to help him grow!

Have a good response for:

1.He has always played short stop or pitcher, why do you have him in right field?

2. Why does he bat last? He hits the ball over the fence in the back yard.

3. Why did you take him out of the game and play that other kid

4. (my favorite) Mom Parent: "We are collecting money from each parent for the trophy presentation party."

Me, "It's tee ball, let's wait until they play competitive ball and earn a trophy"

Mom, " It will be a pizza party and I have already ordered the trophies, so each child will be recognized by you, or I will get my husband to make the presentations."

yes. There will always be 3-4 parents on a team exactly like this.

3rd year coaching baseball and also was asst coach for 5/6 y/o football and 6 y/o soccer.

Baseball is much more my sport for coaching. My best advice is to load down the parents with information. I send out at least 1 email a week with loads of information such as practice time, game time, what field, etc. I already gave them a roster, practice schedule, and game schedule prior to these emails. It's all about communication. It wont make it perfect, but it sure does help.

Pros: When you teach a kid to do something he's never done before and then see him do it perfectly to get an out. Very little things in life are more rewarding than that.

Cons: Parents complete lack of respect for your time. Wont let you know they will be late or miss.

During try outs, we would have one of the coaches rating the moms and then when we went to the draft we would try to get one or two of them on the team.

Assistant coach is the best spot in sports. You get to be there with your kid and make sure he gets a fair shake, but you dont have to deal with the team parents.

I have coached little league baseball for 5 years now in a local rec league. It have had a great time over those five years watching some of the players develop over the season, and even after they move up to the older age groups.

I don't have any kids and did it stricly because I love the game of baseball and thought it would be fun. Every year now it seems a majority of the parents want their kid on my team because I won't play favorites. The best 9 kids will play no matter what.

I didn't really have a problem with any parents till this year.

We call that age "Freshmen". Some of the funniest things you'll ever see are those little ones out there playing football. That's a fun age to coach in any sport.

I coached an 11-12 team for 2 years and it's pretty fun.. The kids are great, but the parents are brutal. Myself and everyone I coached with are all in our 20s so that probably made the parents even more aggressive about where to play their kids etc. Just be straight up with the parents and you'll enjoy it.

i'm not sure if my little man will play that kind of football that young. I think he will just play flag football. I was looking to get him signed up but says gotta be 7..he's 5 turning 6 in Nov.

He'll play next year I guess....

He needs to be atleast 10 before he can play pads..thats the rule im setting. Plus basketball interferes with it...we'll see how it goes

I agree the younger you are the tougher it is. Especially the dads but then we would ask them why they didn't volunteer to coach and they didn't say anything after that.

My twins are almost 6 and the baby is almost 3. I coach both age groups tball teams.

It's been fun so far and the parents have been awesome so far. I'm sure when its more competitive that'll change some, but its an awesome experience and I'm having fun doing it.

We've come up with a code for them. During evaluations, if the kid has a good looking mom, we'll put the letters "HM" next to their name. It stands for "hot mom".

We also have "CM" for a crazy mom that looks like she will stir shite up and cause trouble. Yes, parents that's right. Coaches learn quick who all like to cause drama and bitch about everything and if your bad enough, it will hurt your kids draft just because none of the coaches want to deal with you. At the last baseball seasons draft, there were three teams in my age group drafting and there were two good players who did not go until the last round just because of how their parents act.
