Sony is preparing to reveal the final piece of its PS4 hardware strategy at TGS by showcasing a PlayStation-branded virtual reality head-mounted display, CVG has learned.

The matter has been slightly complicated, but not derailed, by the growing industry support for Oculus Rift. Sony's device will be a categorical rival to Oculus, and for months there have been rumours suggesting the two companies are seeking a partnership.

I was waiting for this to be posted.

Although I think this is a good argument against the MS is the only company trying to innovate point.

I can see this flopping, just like it did previously.

The Oculus COO had a good point on that:

quote:

"If people like Microsoft and Sony did come out and make their own head-mounted display, though, it would really just validate the market," he added. "There's certainly room for more than just one person in this market. Right now we're the only people in it. It would just show that VR really is - that it's important and it's here to stay."

"VR's had a lot of failures in the past, and so the more people that enter the market is good because developers that ultimately have to develop the content, they know they'll have people playing their games which is better for all of us."

i'm not hating to hate because this is your thread or for the PS4.

but i can barely take wearing my TB's or Tritons for more than about an hour. So this thing better be like wearing sunglasses comfortable to even have a shot at not flopping.

Of course not. Because it doesn't fit their argument.

Heh, who knows. If Sony does get a partnership with Oculus it'll be interesting to see where it goes, even if they don't.

I wasn't even aware of Oculus or any of this until yesterday when Bruce linked me to their PC VR headset. Apparently they have a decent following for a PC version they are developing.

This is an accessory, you will have a choice like a normal american. Not an OMG YOU HAVE TO BUY IT BECAUSE WE SAID SO EVEN IF MAJORITY DOESN'T WANT IT!

I'd be much happier if Sony simply announced compatibility with the Oculus Rift rather than release their own device.

Regardless, the Rift has me more excited than either of the 2 new consoles. Watching reaction videos on Youtube and listening to people describe their experiences on podcasts has convinced me this will be more than just a gimmick 5 - 10 years from now.

ETA: And having something like the Rift paired with the Kinect could be something really special. If that happened, having the Kinect packed in with every Xbox One could be a big advantage for MS, assuming they also announced their on VR headset or a partnership with Oculus.

And why would any developers develop for it ?

It really is a chicken or the egg argument.

FACT... The more people that have it in their hands, the more the money the developers will put towards developing for it.

FACT... EVERYONE with an XBone will have a Kinect

FACT... Very few will have the Eye or this thing.

And it will fail just like every other non-mandatory accessory. I mean VR has done extremely well in the past.....

Interesting, but there has to be widespread adoption for this to have legs. Experiences tailored towards immersion have to be marketed by Sony.

Covers your eyes so that the playstation light on the controller doesn't blind you.

Oh yeah, there is, but with most PC stuff like that (flight sims, racing sims) it's going to be a very niche product for a while. At least until the prices come down anyway. Right now you can pre-order the oculus dev kit for $300. That's not too bad from an enthusiast standpoint but for a normal person it is pretty expensive. I believe that you can buy the Omni (the treadmill platform from the video) for $500 already but it's useless until oculus is released. $800 for some pretty cool tech. I won't buy it but I've spent more on less.

There was an article from another website indicating Sony was making something beyond what OR has made. If that's the case, it'll be way too expensive to ever become a factor.
