Dem Congresswoman: Only Reason I’d Vote for Syria Attack Is Loyalty to Obama

quote:

Del. ELEANOR HOLMES NORTON (D-DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA): I happen to believe there has to be a response. I do, I do believe in crimes against humanity need to be addressed, and I am, I can’t believe that the only way to address it is a slight bombing which will somehow punish somebody or deter somebody. I don’t know if there’s some way other than a military way to address this.

BILL PRESS, HOST: You’re kind to join us this morning, Congresswoman. Let me just ask you one final question before we let you go. If, as you said, if the vote were held today, the president would probably not win it. If he doesn’t win it, a week from now, do you think the president will be justified in taking action on his own, you know, unilaterally with Congress having voted against it?

HOLMES NORTON: No, oh boy, no. I think it’ll be like the red line trap. He said if the red line you cross it. I think once you say, "I’m going to Congress," you can’t say, “Okay, I’m going to do it anyway.”

PRESS: Yeah, yeah, I don’t…

HOLMES NORTON: So I think he’ll be in real trouble if he then does it anyway. No president has done that.

PRESS: It’s not an easy decision for any of you, Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton.

HOLMES NORTON: Oh, and I’d like to say, Bill, that if he gets saved at all, I think it’ll be because, it’ll be because of loyalty of Democrats. They just don’t want to see him shamed and humiliated on the national stage.

PRESS: Yeah, right.

HOLMES NORTON: At the, at the moment, that’s the only reason I would vote for it if I could vote on it.

She's just a delegate, she doesn't have a vote. I expect 80% of the Congressional Black Caucus to vote against this. Charles Rangel and Barbara Lee have been all over the TV the last few days opposing Obama on this.

Sounds like she's on the fast track to an appointed position in DC.

So you're going to compromise your values by voting for something you're really against out of loyalty for your master?

What great leadership.

Yes, this is different.

Are there locksteppers on both saides? Sure. But I think the R's tend to be locksteppers on matters of conservative principle. In other words, they'll support anything if it futhers their goals/beliefs/objectives/etc. R's supported Bush on the Iraq wars because R's are some warmongering mofos. However, thhey'll oppose the president if he proposes something they don't believe in. Remember, it was conservatives who led the fight against Harriett Meiers.

This is different in that she is willing to vote against her liberal beliefs just to support Obama.

Agree with the part in bold, but what about Bush and Medicare expansion?

Most conservative oppose govt expansion (in theory), but I've never met a conservative who didn't believe in providing for old people. So I'd call that one a case of dueling principles.

Voting to expand govt to take care of our own elderly citizens and voting to bomb a country who has done nothing to us, and where there are no USA national interests at stake, are two very different things IMO.

She is the one who hits everybody up for contributions. Her district/area needs to be annexed into Maryland next to her into that Congressional District. Then she could vote after the next election, if she won.

Do you think she's the only one like this on the Hill? The problem with Washington is that there too many like her, the only is that she said it out loud.

What about all W's big spending that Republicans supported that went against their small-government values? Then these same Republicans found religion on fiscal respinsibility as soon as Obama was elected.

There are going to be a lot of Democrats that break rank with Obama over this. Remember the NDAA that Obama had to rely on Republicans to pass because of all the Democrats who broke rank?
