For example, former Saints defensive back Steve Gleason, who has spent the past few years valiantly battling ALS, is eligible for a seven-figure payment — even though he didn’t sue the NFL.

Because the settlement expands the pool of 4,500-plus plaintiffs into a class that encompasses all retired players and creates a system for ensuring that only men with severe cognitive impairment will be compensated, Gleason automatically is eligible.

Under the formula that has been created, he can get up to $5 million from the $675 million compensation fund.

Hope he takes to money

I searched Gleason so sue me

Good, because his kids will be growing up without a father.

He can decide if he wants the money or not, I would be shocked if he didn't take it especially it being tax free

Such a sad story. That pic of him from around Christmas is still burned in my brain.

Far be it from me to second guess Gleason, but I hope he takes it to secure his family's future.

why would that be so crazy?

more than likely, he gives a percentage to Team Gleason and puts much of it into a fund to support his family.

Good, I hope he takes it and uses it for his family or the foundation. Much rather see it go to guys with serious issues than someone hopping on the gravy train.

Exactly. I can't think of anyone that deserves it more than him.

It's tax free to him, but if he takes it before he dies and then leaves to wife, I guess it would then be subject to tax unless he put it in some sort of trust. It stinks to say it, but might it be better (assuming his family is currently OK on money) if his wife collected the cash after his death? It is such a sad deal.

Flame suit on, even though I mean zero disrespect with this. Did playing in the NFL cause his ALS? I don't know the answer, just wondering.
