Was at the game and did not see much activity from Welter. Saw the replay last night and he looked lost. Got to the pile when player was down. Looked at stats this morning and not very good for that position. Is this a concern going forward or nit picking.

I was a little surprised that they substituted for Alexander and left Welter in when they switched to nickel.

I read that his stats Saturday were not unlike Minter's first start, (4 assist, no solo's).

It will be interesting to see how he does in the next few games.

Welter didn't do much wrong just gets hated on for bei g the weak link on defense. He is no Minter but who the hell is.

He got out of position on a few plays and gave up some good yards, but most of the night he was ok and close to the ball. He did take a couple bad angles on plays and get caught up on the inside. The one play tcu ran a sweep for a touchdown it looked like welter blitzed inside. Had it not been a blitz he probably would have made the stop on the outside for a five yard gain.

In the third and fourth quarter Lamar Louis got a good bit a play time when tcu went to the option offense. He looked ok also. No Minter but who the hell is. He seemed faster then Welter and had a quicker first three steps. Therefore, we attacked the line a little better.

The good news is our MLB whoever it ends up being is backed up by some top notch safeties.

The bad news if there is any of that, power running teams like Bama will be running straight at the MLB, because that position is probably weakest on the field right now.

I think we'll be fine. Go back and watch the game we played alot of nickle with only two true linebackers on field. I do have concerns with Welter, but he did not play as bad as most think.

No, it is not because he's white. Jacob Cutrera was white, but he could play football. Welter is undersized, slow, terrible instincts, and not aggressive. I could not take my eyes off of him. He was literally unblocked on 70% of plays he was in. I'm just amazed honestly at how bad he was.

While it is indeed possible Minter set the bar much higher than any MLB can achieve this season, this is a position that should be closely evaluated. Plenty of other possibilities here and if Welter is the answer, he certainly left a lot to be desired in the first game.

If substantial improvement is not seen from Welter, his playing time will greatly decrease and there's a very good chance he won't remain the starter.

Right that's the reason he's being criticized

He was TERRIBLE out there.

Him and Blue can sit on the bench together.

And fruge

B/c of the fumble you're gonna sit him the rest of his senior year? You don't think he learned anything there?

There was no middle linebacker.

2 linebackers played in coverage the entire night or blitzing.

Will Debo or Tajh take Welter's spot?

We need a better lb in coverage when we play Ole Miss, A&M, Auburn, and all other spread offenses.

Blue didn't look speedy or powerful out there.

Pretty blah.

DJ Welter is the worst player on our defense ... Im not the first or last person who will say this today or going forward.

Id rather have an undersized player at middle than Welter who is clearly lost and cant tackle.

I guess I didn't quite see what everyone saw. He looked lost at times but so did the olb's at times as well. It appeared to me that he did a decent job of filling gaps and covering the receivers he was assigned to. I do wish he had an extra step but he's gotta play with what he has. IIRC Chavis stated that he does what is asked of him, which is filling the gaps and forcing the ballcarriers to other gaps where the olb's and/or Dline will get the tackle. Much different that what was expected of Minter but they are being utilized in a much different manner. Just my two cents worth.

BTW, you guys that harp on how 'terrible' he is, give it a break. If he was so bad he sure as heck would not be playing for LSU....

I agree. If Welter was that bad, I do believe Chavis would have figured it out by now. I think I will trust our defensive coordinator on this one!

Did I say for the year?

Way to jump to conclusions

But fumbling, missing blocks that get the QB rocked, and running tentatively shouldn't get you more playing time.
