We all know how good our offense is but the final stats for the defense yields good bad news for the defense.

We finished 8th overall in fewest yards given up(under 300 per game), 2nd in fewest rushing yards given up, and 20th in fewest passing yards given up.

We gave up the 2nd most penalty yards on defense. I want to say most of this came with the backups in but we still need to clean this up ASAP.

We are 3rd best in 3rd down conversion rate against which means the d is winning 3rd downs.

We tied for 3rd in defensive sacks.

We gave up 3.5 ypc which tied us for 7th best.

We gave up 0 runs for 40+ and only 1 for 20+(granted it was 39 yards, but still only 1 long run)

We gave up 8 20+ yard passing plays(tied for 4th best) and only 1 40+ yarder(courtesy of White last night who got abused all over the field).

We gave up only 8 rushing first downs combined in 3 games but 10 in the other game(I'll let you figure out which one that was).

We gave up 2 rushing and 4 passing TDs(White gave up 2 last night) which means we have given up more FGs(10) than TDs.

The key stat is that we finished tied for 14th in points given up per game, averaging 20.

If we can keep up that solid run d, keep preventing the big plays, and keep forcing FGs like we have our offense can more than just outscore our opponents this season.

If we can finish in the 15-18 range I think we have a really good chance of going deep into the playoffs.

I wish we could have seen Junior and Tez on the field at the same time this preseason. I'd feel much better if we had a chance to see what they could do.

I think this has the best chance to carry over into the regular season (not necessarily 3.5ypc, but good run defense in general). Forcing teams to dink and dunk on early downs will lead to better TOP for us, and probably more mistakes/turnovers for opponents.

Good stuff.

Our run defense has been pretty freaking impressive so far.

I didn't mention TOP but we finished 4th best there. We have definitely been winning that.

We haven't been forcing turnovers(4 forced fumbles but only 1 recovered; 3 INTs but 2 came last night against backups). I have hope once we are running our real schemes that will change though.

But one thing you absolutely cannot fake is a good run defense and we've had that all preseason. That's just great fundamentals and that should carry over pretty intact.

Hopefully that aspect will make everything look that much better. Spags was horrible in this aspect last season and that kept our guys off balance and, along with the zone schemes, caused us to give up the most yards(but not points) ever.

Speaks to a commitment to the run, I should think.

Yeah being able to actually get stops on 3rd down has been very nice to see. And I think that all leads back to solid run defense.

Get them behind on downs and force them to throw.
Let the dogs loose.
???
Send in the punt return team.(PROFIT!)

And we haven't even played Wilson and Galette yet.

There's an article I found on Galette I think I'm gonna post tomorrow.

I've been dying to see what they can do ever since I heard about the switch to 3-4(I knew immediately they were a part of that decision).

Not getting to see them in preseason was a huge let down and I hope it hasn't put them too far behind.

But I think it can also be an advantage as no one has seen how they look at OLB in a 3-4. Raw talent says that they should do well until teams figure out their tendencies.

I am starting to wonder if Sean and Rob know what they have and decided not to risk injury or show their hand. The timing seems to perfect for their return, plus cutting Eric before they really had to seems like another clue to me.
