I'm a free born man of the USA! (The Wire finale, spoilers)

To those who knew what this topic was about, I finished The Wire yesterday, and just damn! I can't believe that I'll ever see another television program that had me as invested in the characters as The Wire did. Jimmy's wake scene has got to be one of the most satisfying scenes I've ever watched, and it wasn't even the finale (still had the amazing "recycle" recap at the end).
Got to admit I'm a little sad the show is over for me, but I'll definitely rewatch. Guess ill check out Breaking Bad finally. And college football is here now!
But The Wire completely lived up to all of its hype, and I highly suggest it to anyone who hasn't seen it.

Honestly, I get just as much enjoyment rewatching The Wire as I did watching it for the 1st time.

That scene in the finale was great but nothing will ever top the final scene of Six Feet Under.

+1...and the fact that Landsman delivered it-who at one point was painted as slimely yes man to Jimmy's (one of many) foil makes it for me.

I would recommend waiting on this. I jumped right from The Wire to Breaking Bad and I think it ruined Breaking Bad for me. The shows just have such different feels

I just started up the series again for the fourth time. Currently in the middle of the second season.
It never gets old or boring.

In second the idea of waiting. It's hard for anything to live up to the wire. I'd pick something completely different, catch up on Parks and Rec or Curb as a palate cleanser.

Alright. The Wire is an amazing show. The argument is there for it to be a top 5 all time show... But I just want to see if other people think that Mcnulty's storyline was getting a little shark jumpy in the final season. I just think that it was getting really pulp with the whole homeless murder and cover up shite.
Maybe the point there is the lengths that people forced to go to try to deal with the system. I guess that I get that. It just seemed a bit much for a show that had a general emphasis on realism.

It was definitely the biggest stretch of the series (well, Hamstersam is right there with it) but ultimately I accepted it because I thought it set up the end pretty well (the ultimate cover-up at the top of the city officials, running corruption up to a state level).
Also, when I realized McNulty was doing it not to set up Stanfield as the fake serial killer, but as a last resort to pull resources from the mayor that had previously been promised, I liked it a better.
A lot of people say season 5 was by far the bottom of the series, but I liked it better than season 2, despite McNulty's silly fake serial killer storyline.

I still have The Shield at the top, and I'd say The Sopranos are in the same league with Breaking Bad trying to make a big charge at the end - excluding BB because it's not done, I have
1. The Shield
2. The Wire
3. The Sopranos
and they're in a league of their own (with BB almost certainly joining them, pending these final 5 episodes.)
For a younger kid, who hasn't seen it, Hill Street Blues is worth a watch, as it NYPD Blue - both of those shows paved the way for The Shield and The Wire, IMHO. Obviously, The Sopranos is an effort to serialize Goodfellas. (BB is Dr. Jeckyll and Mr. Hyde meets Ozzie and Harriet.)

I think it was just creative writing - they wanted McNulty to die, perhaps kill himself or drink himself to death, because of pressures of the job, corruption, etc. - it certainly looked like it could go that way.
This was a creative way for him to commit "professional" suicide and justify the wake (almost certainly the way they envisioned the show ending, with McNulty's wake) - PLUS have it end on as positive note as possible, with the final montage you could almost hear "The Circle of Life" in the background (and I mean that as a compliment.)
Was it a little jarring? Yes. So was Omar's end. So was the appointment of the new commissioner.
That was the ultimate point of The Wire - you can't fight the system, you have to conform or go your own way.

I found that a bit stupid and the lowpoint of the series, but I understood the idea behind it. He was just that committed to keeping the resources coming to "the group." Committed to the point of career suicide basically.
Awesome, awesome, awesome show. Can't wait to rewatch it in a couple years (watched it for the first time last year).

I'm reading the plot summary of the finale on Wiki, and every sentence takes me back to when I was watching the show. But in a show chock FULL of awesome characters, I think this makes me the most happy to watch/read...even today:
