We could have gotten Steve Spurrier or Mike Shanahan in 1986

I didn't know this but LSU had a chance to hire Spurrier or Shanahan in 1986

Did it ever cross your mind in those days that you might return to the SEC as a coach?

SS: Actually, I interviewed for the LSU head job in 1986 after the USFL folded. I flew in and talked to the committees but wasn’t even invited back for a second interview. Mike Shanahan interviewed for that job, too. They ended up hiring Mike Archer, who was already on the staff. They could have saved a lot of money because they brought in a bunch of us.

The things you don't know tell they come out years later

Eh, this one I don't mind seeing again. I mean it was on here less than a week ago and pops up throughout the off season, but I just see it as a reminder of the level of program we have continued to enjoy. Not many programs can say they said pass to these kind of names, whether it proved to be prophetic or a dumpster fire.

They've been talking about this every year for as long as I can remember. I'm in my mid 40s.

Y'all all knew about Shanahan too? That was news to me. I've heard the Spurrier thing 1000 times, but not this.

At that time, Spurrier was not the ol' ball coach you know today.
He was not a top candidate.
Neither was Archer, I'm just sayin'...

That SOB made LSU pay for not hiring him.

Both spurrier and shanahan did not have the pedigree they currently own

Archer was viewed as a up and coming coach.

The athletic dept was in complete turmoil with the broadhead/arnsbarger/dale brown circle jerk

Hindsight is always 20/20. Mike archer was a good coach, coached for a long time after being let go by LSU. But he was better suited as a position/coordinator, something no one really knew.
