Next Friday I'm going red fishing in Lake Salvador w a god buddy down from Connecticut. A coastie who lived here for two years. I bought the La Sportsman Paradise Lic pack so it covers up to 10 crab traps. So I was gonna throw out a few traps while I fish.

Question is, which traps are legal? Where can I get them?

If I were you, I would go to LA Wildlife and fisheries website and get the correct answers.

Not exactly what you are asking in regards to whats legal.

The typical traps used are shaped like a cube made of coated chicken wire, with rebar in the cage to weigh them down, and large easily identifiable float.

You can get them at a place near the Chef fully rigged, or craigslist usually has some fairly priced. I would just make sure to purchase the larger ones (I think they are about 2.5' high).

Here is exactly what you want from Craigslist:

Around $30 is the price you want to pay for a fully rigged trap, though you may be able to get a used one for a little cheaper.

You will also need to tag the traps and put your license number on them.

Well there are a couple different ways, one if fairly easy, just get a piece of stainless and stamp your license number(your LDWF#) into it. Then you clamp it to a wire on the trap. The problem with these is that they are easy to remove and then somebody has stolen your trap.

The other method is the same stainless clamp or some sort of plastic tag made into the bait box, inside the trap. These are harder to remove, but you have to have the traps made with them in there.

ETA: This is what some of the plastic ones look like

These are some of the stainless ones

You probably wont have them ready for this weekend though man, unless you hit up a local spot.

You can take the chance, but its a hefty fine ($450min-900max) fine plus seizure of the crab traps if you get busted.

Not for the GW though. You may get a warning because you showed effort, but the law says the trap has to be marked.

I'm not going this weekend but next. Gonna go tomorrow and start looking into it. Does every person in the boat need a gear Lic? Or just the tagged/Lic holder?

FYI, Puglia's on Vets in Metairie has a bunch of traps right outside the front door, $29.99 each.

You need to read up on the crab trap rules as they are different in salt and fresh waters but i would just abide by the salt rules in case you use them elsewhere. Also i was not aware of any fishing license that also covered gear license. Crab traps are considered gear like a trawl and need a separate $15 per year license for up to ten traps.

ETA: YOu will need your license id number on each trap. I used metal crimp on tabs that are stenciled with my license number.
