Jiro - Dreams of Sushi
Posted by townhallsavoy on 8/28/13 at 11:28 am00
Anyone seen this documentary?
Watched it on Netflix the other night. Maybe this post should be on the FDB.
It's about an 85 year old man who has the only sushi restaurant with a Michelin Star (three stars actually). He follows a strict routine and has since he was a kid. He's taught his sons to be the same way.
At first it was really inspiring. He talks about his life philosophy and what it takes to be successful in one's trade.
But about halfway through, I found it really sad. He said he missed his children's childhoods. He'd wake up and leave at 5am and get home around 10pm only to wash and go to sleep. He only closes the restaurant for national holidays and even then would rather catch up on paperwork.
I can't imagine living that life. Sure it would be nice to go down as one of if not the greatest at what I do, but I think about football, music, movies, friends, get togethers, beach trips, drinking at the lake, and all the other things I enjoy. I can't imagine living life as a workaholic.
