Went for a big birthday dinner to celebrate a couple's whose birthdays were both last week. Table for 13.

First impressions were about the size of the place, giant dining room - but the noise levels weren't bad at all, probably helped by the high ceilings.

They sat us immediately and we all jockeyed for position around the 3-4 tables they all pushed together in a line for us. They had us up against a wall so the waiters could access behind us. They waited by committee, but we had a couple of main servers to who took care of everything.

The place isn't hip or cool, the waiters didn't try to be either, it was service of top quality - no one waited for anything and if you asked anyone around for something it came out instantly. We ordered two each of the following apps, but they split them up into three plates each since our table was so long (perfect example of how professional and accommodating the service was)

Lobster Dumplings - Fennel, tomato concassé, lobster butter
Blue Crab Potstickers - Country ham, creamy pea shoot butter
Watermelon & Pork Belly - Pickled ginger slaw
Wood Grilled Spanish Octopus - Kalamata, fennel, grapefruit
Crispy Soft Shell Crab - Roasted cashew, creamy brown butter

The soft shell was amazing, the watermelon that accompanied the pork belly had such a fine texture that everyone was impressed by that dish...Everything was great for this course. Pretty much food everywhere.

We split a triple iceberg salad since it came with three different dressings, I don't think I tried it, though it looked good.

Our end of table banded together to order 4 different entrees so we could try a variety of dishes.

I got the
Sautéed Louisiana Tripletail - Sweet corn spoon bread, crawfish maque choux, roasted corn butter

wife got the
Wood Grilled New Bedford Sea Scallops - Wild mushroom risotto, mushroom butter

Couple across got
Sautéed Jolt Snapper - Shrimp etouffée, Louisiana Jasmine rice, lobster butter
Parmesan Crusted Drum - Jumbo Lump crab, asparagus, Meyer lemon, crispy capers, brown butter

Everything was good, I liked the snapper dish, and fish, best of all. I think most who tried my Triple Tail thought it was a hit as well. Serious meal, most of it is kind of a blur.

Neat place that sort of defies New Orleans, though the service seems reminiscent of the old NOLA great places. It's a VERY good seafood place in IMO, straight forward and crisp on every detail. To make up for the decidedly non-NOLA meal we ate at Elizabeth's for brunch the next day.

I you think that is large, you have no idea. Google images Brasserie George(s) in Lyon.

Never have eaten there, but want to. Chef there has a nice piece on one of the fishing shows that comes on on CST.

Yikes.

GW is one of the most consistant places in town. I have friends that say it is the best place in town. While I've been several times, it is not my style. Nothing on the menu really excites me. It's too expensive for food that doesn't excite. IMO.

We went for our 10th anniversary a little over a month ago. The service was outstanding and the food was very good. The did a special menu for us and actually comped our desert. I would definitely go back next time I'm in New Orleans.

Was there Friday night. We had the watermelon/pork belly, octopus, Scalibut & Parmesan crusted drum....and more of those biscuits than I probably should have had. Overall, food & service were great. The watermelon/pork belly was our favorite dish.

very nice review G. never been to GW Fins .. looks like from your post that they put together some good menu items. I love triple tail, that would have been my order; although the corn bread, corn choux & corn butter may have been a little too many corn items for me. Soft shell sounds superb.

Did you all drink a lot of wine? Did anyone get cocktails? Menu obviously seems conducive to whites or lighter cocktails.

Lobster dumplings are killer and their Sea bass is one of my favorite anywhere.

That watermelon was insane huh?

We were there at 9:00 Friday evening, in the furthest corner away from the bathrooms.

Did you like the octopus? One plate made it's way down to me and I ate most of it. It was interesting, I liked it.

I tried the Scalibut, that was probably the only thing I thought was a bit strange. Crazy how the scallops melded into the fish.

was also there Friday evening and couldnt have been happier with the service/food

Had the lobster dumplings, which were fantastic... wish I would have went with the pork belly also, after hearing the few reviews in this thread

Wife went with the parmesan crusted drum, and she claims it was one of the best fish dishes shes ever had. I stole a few bites and I tend to agree with her... it was incredible

I ordered the tripletail... great piece of fish. The crawfish maque choux was a good compliment.

for desert I went with the fresh fruit sorbet... Coconut and Mango

Wife got the white chocolate bread pudding... Im not a big bread pudding fan, but she enjoyed it.

First time going, and wont be the last.

Exactly. Or Foie and pork belly.

I just don't crave seafood enough to spend $100 on it. I would prefer a different style of meal for that price.

ETA: It's really good as long as I'm not paying.

Haven't been in several years, but it was awesome the times I went. That tuna tartar was one of the better things I've eaten. Love that place.

Growing up in Kenner, you have to stick to your roots.

Peche is my seafood spot.

ETA: Great review. I think you really captured the essence of GW Finns.
