Earlier this year, BMac tweeted something about ending regular season games in ties after 11 or 12 innings.

The Phillies and Diamondbacks are in the 18th inning right now. The DBacks combined to score 5 runs off Casper Wells and John McDonald in the 18th.

Marathon games are cool and all, but it's a mockery of normal baseball. Stadium employees, television employees, etc. are doing way more than normal. There has to be an increased injury risk. Pitching staffs are shredded. Plus this game matters a lot more to the Diamondbacks.

And again, not saying I don't enjoy it.

What does the MSB think of ties after the 11th or 12th in the regular season. There are 162 games after all.

Hell no, nobody likes ties.

HELLO! YOU PLAY TO WIN THE GAME!

Leave ties to soccer, look at how well soccer does over here.

Besides, how many games actually go beyond even 13 innings in a season? Or 15? A handful with 30 teams playing 162 games each?

The managers can end it if they want. I enjoy free baseball.

I'm not saying that people like ties or that teams would try to tie games instead of win them.

I'm saying it's dumb having Casper Wells pitch at 2:30 AM in a game that counts in the standings.

Saying soccer has ties and isn't popular in Merica so no we can't attempt to improve the quality of baseball by instituting a rule that exists in soccer (and many other games) is dumb.

It doesn't happen often but it does cause problems for teams down the road after it does happen.

Just part of the game.

I also really enjoy it. But no manager is going to forfeit. No manager would try and tie a game either. They try to win.

So are missed calls by umpires. You shouldn't refuse to improve something just because it is part of the game

How about a home run derby to end a tie

Dude those games are the funnest games of the year for fans. At the game or even on TV.

I was joking, the Fox commercial with that actor acting as the Tottenham coach when he says there would be a riot if there were ties in America.

No major sport here has a tie, leave it that way.

Even hockey got rid of ties.

I agree. I was at the Braves/Nats game that went 15 last Saturday. Dan Haren finished with a save. It was awesome.

But at what cost does it come? The game gets sloppier as it goes on. The next day the Braves sat half their starting lineup and half the bullpen was unavailable. Leaving Turner Field at 1:30 is less than ideal. Not to mention that all of it was unnecessary. The game won't matter in the East standings. It could influence best record I guess but it probably won't.

Also ties are rare in major sports but they do happen. Once every couple of years in the NFL and the Braves even had a tie about 10 years ago.

Yeah but like someone said, that's just part of the game.

You've got to manage your team effectively in late innings, get a clutch hit, something. Someone has to step up and end it.

You've got a slumping player you benched for the game but are forced to use in extras and he hits the walk off winner and bam, busts out of his slump and goes on a tear. Or your team is slumping and that breaks them out, just so many variables.

Can be plenty good from those games too.

Right but very very rare so basically aren't tied. 2 NFL ties in the last 10 years.

NBA, NHL, College football, MLB don't have ties and should stay that way.

Sounds easy enough.

I get wanting to resolve games for fans and marathon games being entertaining and all that. I think it's a legitimate argument to avoid ties. But I think marathon games lessen the quality of baseball too much. I mean Casper Wells pitching in the 18th for a team that is eliminated from the playoff chase against a team still fighting to stay in the race at 2:30 AM? Unnecessary.

There might actually be more ties in MLB in the last 25 or so years than in the NFL. I think it was 02 the Braves had a tie. Against the Padres or Giants maybe?

Right, baseball can't afford to lose more fans.

So you'd just end that game in a tie and the team fighting to stay in the race loses .5 game if the other team won?

Baseball has plenty of fans. By far the second healthiest sport after the NFL.

And that's exactly what I'd do.
