Apocalypse Now

One of the more overrated movies out there. I thoroughly enjoyed the first hour or so of the film. But then they went upriver, into the heart of darkness, and the movie became bogged down. I know what it was trying to do, what the overall arc and message of the film was, but it just didn't sit well with me.

Meh. I really liked it at one time. Now I see it as just a mess of a film.

re: Apocalypse Now

Like most truly ambitious works of art in film, it's controversial and results in divided opinion. Sure, it's a mess toward the end second act. And the third act is sort of "what the frick"? But the source material (Joseph Conrad's "Heart of Darkness") was captured pretty well, I thought. Brando was just as nuts as Kurtz was. That was perfect.

CHARLIE DON'T SURF!!!

I don't know what Robert Duvall's greatest role has been - Tom Hagan, Gus McCrae, or many others - but I thought his portrayal of Col Kilgore was among his best. I love the part of the movie that he's in.

re: Apocalypse Now

Robert Duvall was the best part of the movie. The film lost a lot of its swagger for me once he was left behind by the plot.

And was I the only other person who felt Martin Sheen was a mediocre lead for this movie? He just seemed out of place and miscast.

Dennis Hopper's bit part was fantastic too. I love a lot of the actor's performances and used to love this film, but unfortunately I like it less and less the more I see it.

Sam Bottom's career never really took off - he was so good, young, Last Picture Show (just a kid then, actually, 16), The Outlaw Josey Wales and Apocalypse Now.

It is also interesting to see Laurence Fishburne at that age.

Coppola has such a great sense of humor with things, such as casting Harrison Ford in this film, with the character name of COL G. Lucas.

Ya'll are missing the point of the whole movie - just as in the Heart of Darkness - it's a story about a journey from "here" to "there" - and this particular journey is America's journey to war in Vietnam (kind of war generally).

Willard is a mess - he belongs on the mission - he serves no other role. Everything is nice, neat and tidy when he gets the briefing (freakin' brass, man, always live the high life) - then, as he goes "up" the river, things get worse and worse - order breaks down and ultimately it is an individual battle for survival.

And, just as he predicted, he became what he was sent to destroy.

You fellas should read a book or two.
