Some good stories there. Like how Boise State went from nothing to powerhouse because they knew how to play ESPN's game, and then both BSU and ESPN abandoned the WAC and left them high and dry and broke and folded.

$ and politics like any industry. The US government and corporations do it all the time.

We played unc in the kickoff classic in Atlanta before it was created as a game for alabama this year and we played Oregon in dallas before it was created for alabama last year. These games aren't a new development.

I dislike ESPN as much as the next guy, but that article was nothing more than a whiny bitchfest full of ignorance.

Well yeah. Why they hell would ESPN or any network pay attention to a Boise-less WAC?

quote:

Similarly, Eric Hyman, the athletic director at Texas A&M, said his university’s move from the Big 12 to the Southeastern Conference, which has a closer relationship with ESPN, paid big benefits, particularly for one player: quarterback Johnny Manziel, a k a Johnny Football, the first freshman to win the Heisman Trophy.

“If we were in the Big 12, I don’t know that Johnny Manziel would have won the Heisman,” Mr. Hyman said.

Considering who won the Heisman just one year prior to Manziel this is a pretty stupid statement.

Butbutbut college sports isn't a business! It's about amateurism and the noble, well rounded student athlete playing for pure love of the game!

Aggie doesn't like to hear this, but not only would JFF have won the Heisman in the B12, they would have played for the MNC. Their canned response is "we wouldn't have stopped all those offenses in the B12."

That Ben-Hanan guy has an amazing job; the PASS system would be fun to play around with. The article feels incomplete without including an explanation of CBS's role in SEC scheduling.

Going into the weekend of Nov. 17, with berths in the national championship game potentially at stake, the nation’s No. 1 and No. 2 teams were Kansas State and Oregon. The network put the Kansas State-Baylor game on ESPN and Oregon-Stanford on ABC, both in prime time.

“When both of the top two teams in the country got upset, that was a massive day on the sports calendar that couldn’t have happened if we’d had to make those decisions three or four months beforehand,” Mr. Ben-Hanan said.

ESPN made KState and Oregon lose

Alabama played Clemson in 2008 and played Virginia Tech in 2009 in the Georgia Dome.

that article tries its hardest to be negative, but it just keeps showing all the positive things that have occurred as a result of ESPN's investment in college football. it's pretty funny to read knowing what he's trying to say, and reading what he actually writes

Bingo.

I'm not sure if his hearts in the right place, but his head isn't or if his head is in the right place but his heart isn't. It's obvious he knows that ESPN has fiddled with college football, but he doesn't really know - or at least write - how or why.

That article is the bleeding heart progressive viewpoint rather than the objective honest outlook.
