His skin is jaundiced; his liver is failing. "He's too far gone," she says, flashing an incredulous look when asked whether he could recover. "He's in the end stages. That's it." She says Morrison has been bedridden for a year, can't speak and is being kept alive with the help of a feeding tube and a ventilator.

He and his wife still deny the existence of HIV/AIDS

I damn near cried when I read that article. Wow, the journalist really captured the story.

Sad.

Moral: Don't waste you life with poor decisions. The aren't many things worse than regret.

This makes for one hell of an interesting paragraph

quote:

He starred in "Rocky V," spent part of his fortune on pet monkeys and at least one mountain lion and was once married to two women at the same time. Two years ago, in one of his last interviews, he told The Kansas City Star a story about how he teleported himself out of a bar to avoid a fight.

This paragraph seems sadly typical of the celebrity athlete and the hangers on after the money is gone:

quote:

His life before that was a decadent stream of parties, limos and sex that would've made Keith Richards blush. His life after that appeared lonely. He once lent/gave large sums of money to his entourage, a group that shared copious amounts of booze and women with him as he prowled the bars of Westport in Kansas City. That group of friends, Holden says, disappeared once the money was gone.

I think you could win a bit of money from people with the trivia question: name the boxer to defeat George Foreman in 1993 to win a vacant heavy weight title (tommy morrison)

Yeah, it's odd that so many athletes blow their money on huge entourages.

I guess the more I think about it, the more I realize that it isn't so odd. Anti social people with anxiety issues pay for friends all of the time...it called the Greek system.

However, most people grow out of that by their early to mid 20s.

Athletes will waste millions on fake friends.

That's what I don't get.

Holden was the one who broke the news to Morrison that he'd tested positive for HIV in February 1996, hours before he was supposed to fight Arthur "Stormy" Weathers in a tuneup for an eagerly anticipated bout with Mike Tyson. Holden says the man with the Nevada Athletic Commission who informed him of Morrison's test results had tears in his eyes.

He was 27 years old and had just signed a contract that, according to previous Morrison interviews, guaranteed him three fights and $38 million. And with that test, the guarantees were gone.

Wow. What a shame.

Sad indeed.

He was victim to one of the most brutal beatings Ive ever seen in boxing...without google, who beat him that night?

But his comeback has hit snags. Morrison over recent years has provided blood test results that show he is indeed HIV negative, but skeptics doubt the validity of the tests and have even came forward to allege tampering. So, 17 years later, the Tommy Morrison saga rages on, heightened by the fact that he has been out of public view since licensing troubles derailed a bout with Eric Barrack in Montreal in early 2011.

So, where is Tommy Morrison today? Rumors continue to swirl on internet message boards that the Duke has died; all based on hearsay and lies. No, Morrison is still alive, and fighting a health battle, but against Miller Fisher Syndrome/Guillain Barre Syndrome and not HIV/AIDS as most pundits assume.

Look at the socio-economic backgrounds of the guys most often associated with these stories.

That is a major factor.
