Will Teams Take More Shots Deep Against LSU this Season?

Over the last few seasons, very few teams have taken many shots deep against the LSU defense, and with good reason.

Do you expect the young LSU defense to be challenged more down field this season?

Or do you think the LSU defensive reputation will keep the deep balls to a minimum as we've seen in years past?

Teams have taken their share of deep shots against us, just very few have been successful. If you're asking if teams will be more successful with deep passes, then I doubt it.

If by their share you mean maybe once or twice a game, then I agree.

That's about the average for most teams unless they are consistently taking the top off teh coverage.

I mean, basically this question is "Will LSU get beat deep more this year?" So I'm going to go with no.

This. X10000.

Over the last couple of years, we've also been spoiled with Tharold Simon's length. I thought he struggle at times defending short and intermediate timing routes, but nobody was better at defending the deep ball. His length was such an advantage.

With Simon gone, you can definitely bet to see the deep ball against our young corners and Loston.

Well that's just not true regarding last season. He was letting guys get behind him way too much.

Rephrase again. The D is not young. It is pretty mature. Maybe a little inexperienced, but even too much there.

The DL has 2 4th year players, and 2 3rd year players starting. The LB have 2 5th year players and 1 4th year player starting. The DB have a 5th year All SEC, safety and 1 3rd or 4th year (I forget) safety. There is 1 2nd year and 1 3rd year player starting at CB. The 2nd year CB started all 13 games last year and the other CB was the Nickle Back who I consider a starter. This is definitely reloading the defense, not rebuilding it.

In answer to your original question about more deep passes ..... yes. Opposing teams will not be successful sustaining drives running against this defense and will have to pass. Most teams, also, are better able to throw the long ball.

I guess that all depends on how the first shots deep work out for them.

Do you think teams just roll dice on game day?

They game study weakness and match ups of their offensive weapons against your defense.

They take advantage where they can.

Also agree with this this. Loston can stick you, but hasn't shown consistent ability to cover deep. Sometimes, his aggressiveness gets the best of him when he's got deep coverage duties.

The jalens though have been fine imo even though young.

I like our secondary. Good mix of speed/young talent, and for the love of all things wholesome, God Almighty, please let Craig Loston have just one fully healthy year.

He's underachieved, but that's strictly been over the injury bug imo.

Simon definitely got pwn'd up the sideline against Ole Miss last year.

That will depend on the amount of pressure we put on the QB. If he doesn't have time, he can't throw it deep.

We will see how much confidence Chavis has in the secondary. If he has the corners playing 5+ yards off the receivers, then teams may go for the easier short passes.

I don't think we will allow teams to throw deep, we won't play as much bump and run until we are sure about our secondary.

Simon got burned on occasion last year but his tenure as a whole was extremely solid in defending deep balls. Think Georgia and Oregon games. He slipped a little last year but was still a major deterrent against teams going deep, at least on his side

probably not. i expect them to pick us to death with short passes unless we can pressure the qb and i am not sold that we can. imo, this will be chavis' toughest year and one in which we will have to experience growing pains with many players having to experience their learning curve. kinda like last year; our secondary was not that good last year imo.

Moncrief beat us deep multiple times last year with his double move.

Will the QB have time for a deep route to develop?
