He was a 21-year-old German foreign exchange student at Michigan's business school: LINK.

The cause of death is still undetermined, but whatever he was using to stay awake (Red Bulls, etc.) may have contributed to a heart attack.

Probably prior health issues. A coke bing can have you up 3 days. Many have done this and been fine.

Yea, he had epilepsy which is why nothing will likely happen to BofA although I would expect them to do some sort of compensation for the family, at least I hope so. It's unfortunate and tragic, but this type of work load is normal in I-banking. Thousands of interns and analysts do this every year.

Whoa. I know epilectics are supposed to stay away from any kind of uppers, because the risk of death from seizures grows much higher if brain activity gets too high.

I guess I don't really have enough information to challenge this, but the gist of what I read seems to indicate that he was really trying to do a big blowout for the last two weeks of his internship to impress his bosses. If he completely missed sleep for 2 nights in a row (which I doubt), that would be a little weird.

My gf's brother did the same i-banking internship for Merrill in nyc. The guy said they'd work 15-16 hour workdays and worked on weekends as well. The interns did all the work for the full time guys. He saved around 30k for one summer of work though.

It depends on the bank, for some 100-120 hour work weeks are pretty common, especially for first years and interns. The worst part is the work hours aren't really needed. Often times bankers will get in between 9 and 10AM, finish a few emails till noonish, then sit on their hands until 6-7PM when their VPs and MDs will give them the work for the rest of the night as they leave the office, leaving analysts (and sometimes associates) to stay till 2AM. I could never do I-banking.

I get that bankers work insane hours, but WTF could an intern be doing that is so important that he needs to work 3 days straight.

Ditto.

Looking back now, I'm glad I didn't.

I always hear people making claims about how much work they do on how little sleep, and I just don't think my brain is built for that. If I go past 30 hours in a row without sleep, then I'm toast for a couple of days at least. If I don't get at least 50 hours of sleep a week, then I'm pretty much useless. If I were king, there would be mandated siestas all over the place.

Bitch work that the people just getting to the end of the first year as analysts don't want to do. Then after the interns leave, the interns from the previous summer come in as first years.

I'm the same, I can go a million miles an hour during the day but I need my sleep. Otherwise I'm either a zombie or an a-hole.... or an a-hole zombie.

I'd be pretty surprised if there were not any Amphetamines in his system.
