Smh...

I guess it was a promotion, but a little bit of Deshazier's journalistic soul has to die inside going from covering the Saints to working FOR them.

Matt Ryan and Steven Jackson can't wait to get a look at Will Smith's transition to LB.

Smith said. “Like I said, the majority of the time I’m rushing the passer, and every now and then I drop back in coverage and try to guard those speedsters. But I don’t do that much. I do what I’ve been doing the last nine years, rushing the passer.
“They wanted me rushing the passer and playing the run. They’re going to require me to drop in different coverages and do different things from time to time but for the most part, I’m going to be doing the same thing I’ve always done. That’s why I always said it wasn’t that big of a transition.”

This may be the best we can hope for. Between the cap situation and the organizations' apparent loyalty to Smith, they seem bent on keeping him. I just hope if he does cover someone, it's only gimp-legged, white, eligible tackles.

Will Smith says he basically just rushes the passer now.

Well, so far, he's done worse at that than coverage or run defense.

I think he can be an asset in the run game still and maybe diagnosing a play quicker than a rookie would. Hopefully the few times he does drop in coverage it's strictly zone and not man coverage. I would imagine by the time Martez Wilson gets back in football shape that Smith would go to being a backup

I'd say semi-solid. One notch above diarrhea.

By the way, this article is shameless propaganda.

If for any reason Smith is playing significant time, 99.999% of the passing plays will be going his way. Unless a receiver is relegated to a non-electric wheelchair, they'll beat him 99.999% of the time. The good news is that he won't lose any speed late in the game covering all the receivers in his area because he doesn't have any speed to lose.

This is by far the craziest experiment Payton has ever come up with. It will back fire on him...if he makes the team as a LB.

I'm not sure Wilson is great at coverage or run defense either.

It's not a total loss. There are some things Smith brings to the table. He's an adequate down lineman on short distances. He's not very good getting to the outside though. He seems to have almost lost all of his ability to get pressure from the outside. Raider linemen were handling him all by their lonesome. The times he got pressure he was unblocked. If a lineman picks him up, he's pretty much done for.

If I had to compare him to another linebacker in the league, it would probably be Vince Wilfork.

If Smith makes the team he will be on the field as a situational pass rusher or in 2 TE sets where the formation favors a run.

This is what I hope. I don't see any reason why he can't be a decent situational player at OLB. But he certainly can't be a starter at that position.

DeShazier must be on the Saints payroll doing these videos. Anyone know? Smith more solid everyday sounds like team issued propaganda. I guess he could be more solid everyday... but from a starting point of "let's see if he can play this at all"
