Alls my simple little brain can muster up here as an explanation to my criticism is in trying to gain a universal appeal to your website for more people to visit maybe you shouldn't make a pun about salary cap exceptions that maybe 1% of the general population is aware of

Jus my two cents, although I'm not good on that fancy book learnin' and all like you VOR
Don't get defensive because you didn't get a simple Pelican = Bird, pun. You don't need to know a thing about the nba or cap exceptions to get that.

Could just as easily be the name of a wildlife blog.

Clever but a bit too complicated. BourbonStreetShots is a far better name.

Well of course you would say that Michael.

If you let 100 people in the city of New Orleans guess what the content on that website was before releasing it, you'd be lucky if 1-2 got it right.

Branding can overcome naming issues, but The Bird Writes is too clever for its own good. I'm not saying I hate it, but if Niles and Frasier knew basketball, this is a name they'd come up with.

It fits that blog very well though. It might not attract any more hits, but I don't know if a different name would help because of their content.

They are a smaller site that focuses on the margins of NBA discourse more than BSS. They do more advanced stat pieces and number crunching, which will never be a big draw for most fans. The defining voice of BSS is McNamara. Many of his pieces are opinion driven and not stats focused. Rohan's site doesn't have a writer like that and I don't know if they want someone to be that voice.

A different name might attract more eyeballs at first, but I wonder how many would actually stick around

It's a good name. Rohan had to argue pretty hard for it, however. The logo helps the lack of reference to the Pelicans (see the pattern?), New Orleans, or basketball, as will search engines. A bird, after all, can refer to a hawk, so the cap reference only helps so much. The logo bridgesthe gap.

Always been a fan and will continue to be.

VoR's point is a good one, and no one needs any name to describe what it does: McDonald's is more suceessful than Burger King despite the lack of the word burger. Claritin means what?

As always, good job by Rohan.

People are confused because, like I did, they probably read the subject wrong.
I thought you were saying the nickname of the arena would be bird wriites.

I'd be willing to bet a good majority of the posters here knew what At the Hive was.

We (meaning Rohan, I just supported him) had to put up a fight to go with The Bird Writes (just plain "Bird Writes" was taken). Coming up with a decent name that contains the word "Pelicans" is pretty tough. We figured some casual fans would not get the reference, but went with it anyway, mostly because it was the best of the ones we came up with. The whole enterprise is more complicated than you'd think, especially when you have to get it approved by the corporate folks. I hope it grows on y'all.

Personally, I'm a little upset I didn't think of "Wages of Wings" until last week, when this was already in the bag.

Agreed. Probably don't want to be more obscure than we already went, but I made myself chuckle.

I get that it's a pun on Bird rights, but it's not conveying an actual point. What about Bird rights? NOLA doesn't do anything special with them nor has the franchise used them to retain a key player. It would have fit with Boston, had Boston's mascot been a bird... this just doesn't fit. Same thing with Fowled Out, though for some reason (can't place my finger on it) it strikes me as a lesser offender.

I like Wages of Wings more, since the site uses advanced statistics in its analysis to great effect, much like Wages of Wins does.

I am glad we're no longer ATH though.

Great name. And clever. Infinitely better than BSS.
Agreed. Love the name. Hope the BSS folks are paying attention. This is what happens when you actually put some thought into a clever name instead of just lazily throwing out a cliche and saying everyone would hate no matter what given the no-Pelican name constraint.

Hey, Fowled Out is still available and that's much better than BSS too.
