He did have a much better game than week 1, but I just dont see how anything good can happend when they ask him to cover a RB or TE.

When he was in coverage, he basically just dropped into a small zone. But yes, if a QB sees it and has time to dump it in the flats, it could spell trouble.

Jaquizz Rodgers will have 20 catches if they let him do this week 1.

-1st and 10. Smith is playing SAM. Drops back into coverage and takes away the immediate throw to the TE in the area. Flynn scrambles and Smith leaves the TE and goes in pursuit. Flynn completes the pass to the TE for 7 yards.

I remember that play. I kept thinking, "He's too slow keep up with the TE who was behind him and too slow to go after the QB who was rolling out."

When he drops into coverage, he looks like the fat out of shape guy on a flag football team who they keep telling to play zone and count to 10 Mississippi because he's too slow to actually cover anyone.

This is good. He can focus on calculating the statistics so that you can have more time to analyze the data.

Between his cap figure and the fact that we are thin at OLB, he's not going anywhere. I think it's a good think keeping him going at OLB whenever possible because it gives him ample time to acclimate to the position change. I look forward to Galette and Wilson returning, until then I don't see any reason not to keep him out there.

I do.
He sucks donkey balls at OLB and is very average as a DE.
He is taking snaps from real OLB's.
Go anywhere but where they are playing him.
Hell... put him at ILB and run right at his fatass.
He hurts this team at OLB.

Which ones would you start over him right now? I didn't see anything spectacular playing behind him at OLB. The only bright spot at LB as a whole was Humber getting after the QB, but that was a pretty awful line.

And Humber is an ILB.

Any of them with the one's to "shine" would be fine with me.
Smith is giving them 6 million reasons to give him snaps and it sucks.
Perhaps the FO is saying "play him... don't care where cause he ain't leavin".
And If the coaches believe he is better than our OLB backups then we are damn f@cked for quality of depth at OLB.
Put Humber at OLB. I know its not his natural position but at least he plays with speed and instinct.

Correct. I can't wait to see how he does against the Texan line. I doubt they bring him in on the blitz as much against a more competent group, but he looked like a junkyard dog getting after a mailman last game.

according to stats from last season, wasnt he one of the besst run-stopping DEs in the league?

that would beg the question, why make him an OLB instead of a DE? Hes already got the pounds packed on.

Yes it was preseason.
Yes it was against the Raiders.
No, I'm not comparing the two.

But Humber's play the other night reminded me of this guy.

If he's half as good him, we've got a special player on our hands.

Lets hope he brings it again vs the texicans. He really looked faster than anyone else on the def team.
Some shine when they get the chance.
Looking forward to see what Foster does this week as well.

I see where you're coming from, but at some point you have to trust the front office and what they see at practice. Playing a 3-4 OLB in the NFL has a HUUUGE learning curve, and a rookie playing that position well is a very uncommon thing. Smith has a good football IQ and play recognition that comes with being a veteran. Do I think he's cut out for the position? Hell no, he's overweight, too old, and too slow to play it well. But with Tez and Galette sitting out on these games, there aren't many options. You start throwing in Rookie A and Rookie B into the most key position in a 3-4 and you won't like the results.

It's a fact, we are in dire straights at that position. It was the gamble they took by not going for a perfectly viable OLB in the first round of the draft, but hey, I'm not going to resurrect that old horse pinata.

Put Humber at OLB

Might work. If they haven't tried it during practice yet, I'm sure they will after last week.

Put Ingram at OLB? He seems to run into people pretty quickly.

he was somewhat effective as a run defender. More so as a down lineman

Exactly what I saw. Standing up as the End he was effective. Standing up as the OLB, not so much.

He works well in a small area. You put him in space and he looks terrible.
