Feinstein wants to stop online news sources: Wants to define "journalist"

quote:

S. 987 (Free Flow of Information Act) defines what a media provider is and who a journalist is, and is not. However, Senator Feinstein is not satisfied with the language and wants it further restricted. According to a report, Feinstein says, “I’m concerned this would provide special privilege to those who are not reporters at all.” She is referring to bloggers and the likes of Edward Snowden, NSA whistle-blower. Feinstein went on to suggest that the term journalist only apply to those who report for mainstream media sources, and do so as a primary source of income. H. 1962, the House version of the bill, already includes such stipulation:

The term ‘‘covered person’’ means a person who, for financial gain or livelihood, is engaged in journalism and includes a supervisor, employer, parent, subsidiary, or affiliate of such covered person.

quote:

The Electronic Frontier Foundation reports that the amendment will require journalists to meet one of the following criteria:
working as a “salaried employee, independent contractor, or agent of an entity that disseminates news or information;”

either (a) meeting the prior definition “for any continuous three-month period within the two years prior to the relevant date” or (b) having “substantially contributed, as an author, editor, photographer, or producer, to a significant number of articles, stories, programs, or publications by an entity . . . within two years prior to the relevant date;” or

working as a student journalist “participating in a journalistic publication at an institution of higher education.” (emphases added)

of course she does.

it'd make it easier for her to do her & the administration's job of lying to protect an unaccountable agency that has unchecked snooping power.

this would probably help out in that effort a great deal

Shakespeares "the pen is mightier than the sword" must be biting someone in their arse somewhere, and this is not going to be allowed to continue. Take a look at DeTocquevilles' measures of the things that made America great, and freedom of the press was one of the most prominent.

CB...I see it, say it and am mocked for doing so. The political process and Constitutional Law as we have formerly known it has become OBSOLETE. It's literally over. Like the final second ticking off and Saban heading to shake hands with that look of 'done deal' on his face.

It's like the Muslims using our Freedom (Constitution)...to destroy our freedom. The Dems PICK AND CHOOSE WHICH LAWS support their cause, emply em toward Authoritarian hegemony...and ignore them that would stop the tyrannical march.

All that is left is for the stupified DENIERS on the Right to snap out of their psychoses, and get to work, taking the gloves off.

Just a matter of time anyway.

Won't pass muster in court. Appeals courts are already ruling journalists can be almost anyone. The two NE circuits have already done so.

You are correct. One the first things I learned in journalism school is that journalists/reporters have no special rights that are not granted to the general public.

Rights are not to be confused with privileges. The press is granted privileges by institutions/individuals to cover events and allow special.

This is really dangerous territory. If allowed to stand, then the party in power gets to decide who can report and what is allowed to be reported and how.

NO ONE should support this idiocy.

So how would anyone start their own publication? Doesn't seem rational to me.

Government officials have a LOT if leeway by controlling access. That seems to me to be enough to keep out the riffraff. They do NOT need MORE power here.

It's pretty clear what they fear... The people knowing what they are up to, and the inability to control their "messaging".

the "betters" in DC are tired of not controlling the message.

The CFR in the 1930s determined that if they could control 1/5th of the newspapers in the country they could effectively control the narrative for the country. THEY DID JUST THAT.

The rise of the internet and the citizen journalist has created a climate where they no longer control the message, as the dwindling newspaper circulation and MSM viewership shows on a monthly basis.

Sadly, their new plan is to simply outlaw what they cant control.

These people are tyrants. They need to be dealt with appropriately...by use of of the rules set forth in our Constitution.

Designating who is officially a journalist is extremely dangerous.

Can you see the government threatening the official designation of anyone who dared to report something the government did not want reported?

It's bad enough now with the way they choose who has access to the WH press corps.

This is where Obama picks his favorite reporters ONLY allowed in, huh?

Meanwhile...

quote:

Joseph Curl ?@josephcurl 4h

WH pool report says Obama briefed on Egypt, so, time to hit the golf course. Oh, they're slaughtering people on a bridge. Hundreds will die.

Joseph Curl ?@josephcurl 15 Aug

OBAMA: 'Our traditional cooperation cannot continue as usual when civilians are being killed. Now watch this drive!' (No cameras allowed)
Collapse

Joseph Curl ?@josephcurl 15 Aug

Oh, but don't worry, Cairo: The $1 billion check in U.S. aid is in the mail. And we'll keep sending those M1A1 Abrams tanks and F16 jets.
Expand

in fact most government agencies (states, not federal) have exited the practice of issuing press credentials in the last decade or so.

So she wants to narrow the scope of journalists but wants to widen the scope of marriage?

baby steps...
Feinsteinenstein finally figured out that the only way to obliterate the second amendment is to slowly dispose of the first, first.

This reminds me of a quote from Chris Matthews last week. He was in a round table discussion about media bias. When asked about his pro-Obama bias he said something like "I'm not biased in favor of Obama. The reason I often praise him and seldom criticize him is because his opinions and my opinions coincide."
