I had a few $ burning a hole in my pocket so I ordered a 91/30 from Bud's Gun Shop. Picked it up and it's a 1943 Izhevsk in really good condition with a great bore and all matching serial numbers. Not bad for $139.

Anyway, I had a couple questions. Do y'all have a tried-and-true way of removing cosmoline? This thing is covered in it. Also, do y'all use surplus ammo or non-corrosive ammo? If surplus, what do you clean the bore with afterwards?

Break the gun down, then use mineral spirits and an old toothbrush, paint brush, whatever to scrub away the cosmoline.

I shoot whatever I can find in mine. The surplus stuff is fun. The 203 grain Brown Bear soft lead point stuff shoots pretty well too. One hell of a round!

As far as neutralizing the corrosion, use something water based. I have seen any and everything recommended but hot water or Windex seem like the easiest.

Follow with normal cleaning of the barrel.

Might want to pick up a long, solid cleaning rod to push patches with as well.

to remove the cosmoline I used a hair dryer, the sun, and HOT water to soak the metal parts.

Google it, there are a ton of ways from putting it in a trash bag in the sun, to using a Shark steamer.

Get bottle of degreaser from an auto parts store (o'reillys, autozone, etc). The stuff is purple. I can't recall the name but is was something like Purple Power or some shite.

I rebuilt a Turkish Mauser a few years ago that was covered in cosmoline. The purple degreaser got it all off in a snap, even the wood soaked parts

I use the purple bottle of Super Clean around the garage. Be careful. Strong stuff. I tried cleaning my garage door once and it took off most of the white paint. Good thing I was going to replace the door in a few months anyhow

Thanks fellas. I'll try heat first and then move to some sort of degreaser.

Looking forward to firing the ole boomstick.

I have 3 Mosin-Nagants and I did basically what Rompus said. The 7.62x54R is a helluva husky round. I use any surplus available and clean them right after I shoot them. have fun!

I take it apart and let everything soak in vats of mineral spirits, then scrub it all down with toothbrushes.

I have only shot the Herters rounds from Cabelas out of it so far, havent gotten around to ordering any spam cans yet.

Also, congrats on a good Mosin from Buds. I hear its really hit or miss with them.

I have one that I have never fired nor have I ever purchased any ammo for it.

I might give it to a kid or something.

What are they good for other than plinking?

Amonia based. The salts created by corrosive ammo attract water and ammonia neutralizes them.

I've used Windex but you will still get some corrosion. Balistol is very good for this problem as it will neutralize the salts and keep moisture from the bore/bolt face.

Not a bad round at all for deer. Ballistics are similar to a .308 and the ammo and guns are cheap.

Hunting and a great platform to practice minor to major gunsmithing on.

I have a carbine I have to completely redo - it may never be safe to fire again. It is a Katrina refugee and has a little patina on it from that.

It would look great as a museum piece.
