I was sleeping in my recliner while the wife was on the computer in the front room at around 8:45pm last night when there was a banging on the front door. I woke up when our boxer went ape shite crazy and stumbled to the front door. Luckily i didn't have the keys to the door so i turned on the porch lights and find this dude on the porch. He backed to the edge of the porch just out of the flood light and was rambling about needing gas money then when i tell him (through the door) that i can't help him he changes his story to needing directions to Lafayette i proceed to tell him i can't help him and after about 30-40 seconds of me repeating this statement he walks back to his car that is running in the street then turns around in the driveway and leaves the neighborhood. There is a gas station within sight of the entrance to our street. I believe he was waiting for me to unlock the door. Dude looked like a meth head. White, bald headed, skinny wearing shorts with socks and those rubber sandals that velcro over the foot. Car looked to be a silver chevy impalla. Sheriff's deputy rolled up about 15 minutes later. Anyone in the Houma area might want to keep their guard up.

that was probably an angel that god sent to you to test to see how much of a dick you were.

Should have let the boxer out of the back door.

I'd have asked him to mow the grass for $10.

No doubt there would have been blood on the lawn. That dog will definitely tear someone a new a-hole.

this is a good reminder to never just open doors. No matter what advantage you think you have, you never know what your up against.

I've heard this same story several times recently. Thankfully the people I've heard it from didn't open the doors.

Really strange dude that is clearly out of place banging on your door at almost 9pm and you would see nothing wrong? My house is about 80' from the street and no porch lights were on. This is a one street subdivision off of a main hwy on the outskirts of town.

ETA: oddest part was his ever changing story. Story changed every time i told him i couldn't help him.

Now that we can agree on Worst part is having a wife that doesn't want to go to sleep since she was so shaken up by this.

ETA: i really need to reassess my security plan. Not having a weapon readily at hand is definitely a problem and there are no shortage of weapons at my house.

That is a scenario I've walked through with my family (suspicious person(s) at the front door). Here's the drill:

-At least 1 family member covers the front door with a carbine (from a location that "knocker" won't see)
-At least 1 family member covers back door with carbine (in case front door is a diversion).
-I answer door with pistol behind my thigh.

If I jump back and try to draw, then family member is to shoot through the door. Family member covering back door likewise takes care of anyone trying to get through back door.

All other family members hunker down in "safe" room with weapon trained on that room's doorway.

If family members covering doors must retreat (doubtful), then they head for a predetermined room adjacent to the "safe" room.

If I scratch the back of my head while talking to the person at the door, that is the "ok, I'm going to let them in" signal... back away and keep the weapons out of sight so the visitor doesn't have a heart attack.

Jesus man. Do you not have a slot above the door to pour boiling hot tar on the possible intruder?

not bad

I just have about 10 years before the other family members in the house could be competent enough for that type of thing. That and the wife has an unnatural fear of loaded guns in the house

Take away the glasses, facial hair, a few years of age and dress him from walmart and that is pretty good match
