The Godfather is considered by many to be one of the greatest filsm of all time. I'm not setting up this thread to dispute that opinion; I've just always found it interesting that Cabaret swamped it at the 1972 Oscars.

Cabaret won 8 trophies that night; The Godfather, only 3. In head-to-head categories, Cabaret won 4-2, losing only Picture and Adapted Screenplay while besting the Coppola film in the categories for Director, Supporting Actor, Editing, and Sound.

Yes, I realize the Academy isn't always the best barometer of how timeless a film is. Still, it is a very good barometer of what the industry thought of a film at the time of its release. Given the fact the The Godfather is held in the same category as GWTW and the other great Oscar-winning Best Pictures, its performance at the '72 Oscars signals that the industry thought otherwise.

Only 14 other films have won 8 or more Oscars. Cabaret is the only film to have won that many and lose Picture.

Thoughts?

Which is, in the grand scheme of things, kind of a big one, isn't it?

Cabaret is one of those movies that did not age well, but it is a product of its time. Occasionally a film will echo it to a degree, Chorus Line, Chicago, Moulin Rouge, so the industry has not forgotten it - however think of how significant an impact Godfather has had in the intervening (OMG 40!) years.

One day you might realize that the Oscars are very political and, therefore, pretty much worthless.

Worthless is probably too strong. I agree with the rest of your sentiment.

Let's take 1998 in film: ultimately Shakespeare in Love took best picture over Elizabeth, Life is Beautiful, Saving Private Ryan and The Thin Red Line. Just like in politics, if The Thin Red Line had not been nominated, SPR probably wins the thing.

Not nominated were Dark City and Pleasantville and, for my money, better than any of the nominees, except SPR.

ETA: I pick on Shakespeare in Love because it was a terrible Best Picture Winner - worse than English Patient, which is pretty bad.

Shakespeare In Love won because Harvey Weistein lobbied heavily for it to win so he could make more money off of it.

Just awful. Crash was pretty bad, too. Maybe worse than SiL and English Patient combined.

I have home videos of my kids getting diapers changed that are better than some of these "Best Picture" winners.

You can say that again.

And Crash won because, obviously, it was a melodrama with a heavy-handed anti-racism message. The Academy loves politically correct movies.

I guarantee The Butler gets a boatload of nominations, if not wins them, because it stinks of Oscar bait. The only thing that will hold it back is its release date (August as opposed to December)

I will say that I have never seen Whittaker turn in anything but A or A+ performances.

Whether that's enough to carry a film to 6 or 8 Oscars remains to be seen.

At the time, Cabaret was a huge pop culture phenomenon. But it didn't have any legs.

Sort of like watching Avatar and wondering, "Why the hell was this the most successful movie ever made?"
