We know that Bilbo was 111 at the beginning of LotR:FotR, and it is revealed in RotK that once Gollum got the ring it changed him over a long period of time. We would think the same would happen to Bilbo...but maybe Bilbo is too strong a person for it to change easily.

The history of the Ring and it's time in Middle Earth is well documented...so how long did Gollum have the Ring before he lost it to Bilbo, and how old do you think Gollum is?

I remember Frodo recognizing the name, and maybe it was just a legend...be he figured out Smeagle was Gollums real name, and Gollum used to be a hobbit just like him.

My friend said that he thinks the Gollum was like one of the first hobbits...so that means that Gollum is really old, and may rank up there with some elders of Middle Earth!

Gollum found the ring about 1,500 years after it left Isildor. He's just over 500.

He was mid aged when he found the ring, had it for 500 years then bilbo had it for 60 years. So gollum is right around 600.

OK. Thanks.

So what other creatures in Middle Earth are Gollums age, and what marked events was he alive during?

They were river hobbits I think. More inclined for adventure and stuff.

Sam can't swim, I don't know if any of the hobbits can swim, but Smeagol and his buddy (forgetting the name) fished on boats and went swimming.

Hobbits in the shire seemingly farmed and did townie stuff all the time. Bilbo was kind of an oddball in that he welcomed adventure.

As far as what other events Gollum was around for, I'm not really sure.

The only characters who outlived Gollum were Elves and Wizards. Gandalf and Saruman were still around at that time. Dwarves live a long time, like up to 300 years, but I don't think any of them were alive at the time that Gollum found the Ring.

Sauron became more active in Dol Guldor around the same time Gollum found the ring. The White Council was formed with Saruman as it's leader. Galadriel and Gandalf were also a part of it.

he wasn't a hobbit. He was a river folk.

ETA: Nevermind. He was a "Stoor Hobbit of the River-Folk"
