Planted two tress about a month ago for the wife. They where already about 12 foot tall when I planted them. Its been a struggle with the heat kepping them from dropping their leaves. How long should I wait before I feed? I googled but there are a million different opinions. What says the all wise OB?

Ozmocote (general purpose fertilizer) now, then in november, then in february. Also, top them (cut 'em back) the 2nd week of february. They'll thank you with new spring/summer growth.

Feed your crape myrtle with high nitrogen fertilizer in the spring a soon as the leaves appear. Make another application two months later and then don't feed for the rest of the year.

Overfeeding can cause the plant to put its energy into growth at the expense of blooms. Use slow release fertilizer to prevent the growth of suckers that are susceptible to disease and insects. If suckers do appear, prune them off.

I've never planted new and never fertilized. This was just what I found. And wasn't trying to contradict post 2

I 've been in landscaping for over 6 yrs, and its been my exp. that you can use a slow release fertilizer (like i said, ozmocote) pretty much every few months and they will respond positively.

Right now, you should just concern yourself with ensuring that the trees get plenty of water. Theyll drop those leaves when winter hits. Cut em back right around mardi gras and theyll explode late spring/early summer with new growth.

You do not top crape myrtles. Ever!! You selectively prune interior growth. Crape myrtles should not be topped. Pick a smaller variety if you do not want it to tall. Topping the tree will make it more susceptible to disease and infestation. Do not be a crape murderer. Haha

Don't plant trees in July. Too hot.

As others have said, NEVER.

Google "Crepe Murder". I prune mine to look like trees.

Guess clarification is needed for my "cut em back" comment. I meant selective pruning, maybe no more than 6 inches off the top, suckers, entangled limbs, etc. By no means am i an advocate of arbor murder
