I can't even imagine what that family is going through. As the father of an 8 month old son, this is absolutely terrifying to me.

And I think someone was cutting onions in my office.

Sometimes I wish I was off the grid and didn't have 24/7 access to stories like this. Incredibly sad story and really leaves me feeling empty today. I hope his parents can find some comfort in friends and family.

as a father of 4 the biggest fear that I have is losing a child, the only peace of mind the parents can have is knowing that they have a little angel watching over them from heaven.

I know some of you know about the son that I lost at 7 months old to SIDS and with the anniversary date of his death rapidly approaching (Sept 1) this article had me damn near a full blown panic attack. As for the peace of mind you mentioned...it's very hard to believe in any kind of emotional peace after burying your child..atleast that's how it is for me. It made me question everything I have ever believed in and shook my life to the core. A huge part of me died with him and it's a part that I will never, ever get back. I raged against God, against family and friends, but most of all I raged against myself. I cannot say that it has gotten better with time because it would be a lie. I've learned to accept it but that doesn't keep my arms from aching, literally, because I will never hold him again as long as I'm living. My heart physically hurts for these parents and I only hope that their path to acceptance and some sort of happiness is as soft as it possibly can be.

This scares me more than anything about having a baby. I hope I'm not asking too much, but did you and your husband take all of the SIDS precautions (back sleeping)?

I cannot imagine your pain and I can almost feel it through your post. I'm so sorry for your loss.

I'm crying after reading your post. I can't imagine the pain I would feel if I was to lose my son, and it's something I could never wish on any parent. Wishing you the best.

yeah, not that it would make things any better but I'd be hard pressed to not curse God for the whole world to hear if what happened to you ever happens to me.
I just don't see how any human being could be expected to carry that burden.

I am so sorry you had to go through that.

Yes we did. We were pretty much OCD about it because he was a preemie to begin with...born at 25 weeks pregnant and he weighed in at 2 pounds and was 11 inches long. He spent the first 3 months in the NICU fighting for his life. I was as prepared as a mom can be to lose him during that period..the odds of him surviving were stacked against him. He beat all of the odds though and as each day passed once he was home, the fear of losing him faded away. I felt like we were home-free and by the time 7 months rolled around, those stressful, tumultuous days in the NICU seemed a distant memory.

Most people believe that a child has to be asleep to die from SIDS. While this is true in the overwhelming percentage of deaths, there are some who fall victim to SIDS while awake. Kyle was at the baby sitter's house and I was at work in the ER of our local hospital. I was the only nurse working the ER that day..it's a very small hospital. Long story short, the ambulance called and said they were enroute with a 7 month old, CPR in progress and it never occurred to me that it might be Kyle that they were bringing in. It was Kyle and he was, for all intents and purposes, dead on arrival. The babysitter was CPR certified and had taken a class about caring for a preemie. She said she walked across the hall to the bathroom and he was in his walker playing. She said it was maybe 5 minutes later she noticed he was very quiet so she went to check on him and found him in his walker with no pulse and no respiratory effort. Sorry this is so long, y'all, and I apologize if it upsets anyone but it's almost cathartic to spill this.
