quote:

Detroit — After he felt the impact of a blazing Nolan Ryan fastball near his right shoulder, Robin Ventura had a few seconds to think about his next move. Take the walk to first base. Or make a statement. He chose the latter — and paid for it. But in doing so, he had a starring role in one of the most memorable brawls in Major League Baseball history. Two of the principals from the now-infamous incident between Ryan and Ventura — which took place 20 years ago today in Arlington, Texas — are at Comerica Park this weekend. Ventura, 46, is the White Sox manager; meanwhile, Chicago’s skipper 20 years ago was Gene Lamont, the current Tigers bench coach. Ryan now is CEO of the Rangers. “I didn’t know it was 20 years ago, to be truthful, until somebody told me yesterday,” Lamont said before Saturday night’s game. “I never thought about it, really, but it’s interesting.” Interesting, indeed. Ventura was just 26 at the time, while Ryan was 46, in the final season of his Hall of Fame career.

Yeah, no joke. I was about to start my senior year of high school.

It occurred on a Wednesday. I'm pretty sure it was on espn. Gwynn had 6 hits that night also. What a stud!

I have the autographed photo in my office. Nolan could probably still whip Ventura's arse.

I just re-watched the video. Forgot Bo Jackson was the SOX at the time. Luckily for the Rangers he was a peacemaker during the brawl.

watching a game a couple of weeks ago, the ESPN game crew (forgot which) were talking about this incident. Apparently Ventura tells the story that he started out to the mound... then realized that was going to be a big mistake...but he had already committed so either take the beating or back off and never live it down. He was going to be immortalized either way.

dang, td. you've got me thinking too hard this morning. i see your point and, yes, that would be 20 complete seasons, but this one is not over.

2013-1 year = 2012
2013-20 years = 1993

20 years ago from today is aug 4, 1993

There was a big interview with Ventura on local Dallas radio about it last year or so. Ventura didn't want to charge the mound but there was a team meeting earlier about Nolan Ryan, who was notorious for pitching inside and plunking people. The White Sox agreed that the next batter who he hit would have to charge the mound. Ventura was the unlucky guy who got plunked, but he wasn't really a hothead who wanted to charged the mound. So that pause he makes is him deciding to go through with it, because if he didn't charge the mound, he'd never hear the end of it.

He said that was a miscalculation.

Yeah I always thought he wasn't really committed to charging the mound. He seemed indecisive. I just assumed he realized he was charging an aging living legend. If he kicks his arse he looks bad, if he gets his arse kicked he looks bad.

He didn't appear to be genuinely angry. He almost allowed himself to be put in the headlock

The best part about this picture is that Nolan Ryan autographed it

new thread time

quote:

In 1993, then 46-year-old Ryan hit then 26-year-old Ventura with a pitch. The White Sox third baseman charged the mound but Ryan put the younger player in a headlock and got in a number of shots to his head. It still makes highlight reels of all-time baseball brawls.

i'll never forget him striking out rickey henderson for his 5000th strikeout

td, i'm not sure what you're asking. the "20 years ago?" in the title is because i cannot believe it has been 20 years since this happened. that did indeed happen 20 years ago from today.
