I just realized tonight that Gonzo is the second highest reception leader in NFL history(only behind Jerry Rice), but has more receptions in his 15 year career than Rice had during his first 15 years.

But it's not just that, it's the separation, excluding Shannon Sharpe and Witten(60%), Tony is double the next highest TE in career TE catches.

To be that so far and away dominant at your position has to mean that you were the best of the best...right?

not compelling

put it this way
Gold Glove Out fielder, 700 hrs, next best 600hrs)
gold glove catcher?(dunno, don't like baseball), 600 HRs, next best 550hrs)
cy young pitcher, 400 hrs....next best 100hrs

a guy that dominant..year after year...where no one comes close(no manning, brees,Rodgers,Brady argument)...not seeing, in my inebriated state, a player that comes close.

Gonale has played in way more games his first 16 seasons than Rice has.
Rice averaged 5.4 receptions per game in his first 16 seasons Gonazlez averages 4.9

Rice also played with a top 3 and then a top 10 qb in his first 16 seasons too at a position that is expected to catch the ball.

Gonzalez didn't play with a stud qb until he got to Atlanta and he was catalyst for the revolution at tight end in the NFL.

Rice also had a strike-shortened seasons somewhere in there too.

oh dear.

i actually see the merit in this thread, though. the point is, has there been another player that is so much better than anyone else at their respective position? i really dont think so. the BPOT can't actually be a TE so you're gonna get shite but i see the point being made.

Tony Gonzalez isn't the best TE ever. Also its a 'z' at the end not a 's'
