Ive been thinking about building one, just seeing if anyone has already done so.

Also I am well aware of the laws and regulations.

Don't you know this is very illegal?

I have a friend of a friend that tried to make one once with two sizes of PVC pipe that he meticulously perforated then filled with steel wool and capped with a balloon. Sounded as quite as a 22 when he fired it. But that was mainly because it was a 22. Next time he may use a condom instead of a balloon.

No. I also never drank alcohol under age, tore warning labels of mattresses, or street raced on a public road.

Laws and Regulations aside, your issue will be with caliber and pressure. A maglite has good aluminum tubing for a .22 caliber. You will need steel or titanium for something hotter.
A good template to look at is the new Sig MPX series in 40 cal

This is a "Flash Suppressor/Muzzle Brake" that accepts a tube that screws into the Brake.

Finding the correct steel and machining the baffles will be challenging. Some Washers with spacers inside a tube will work. Make sure your washers will not collapse inside the tube with your spacers. I do not think you can machine the conical baffles easily. I would try stacked baffles first with some grade 8 washers/spacers to created chambers.

I was told there are some muffler parts for Briggs and Stratton that work once or twice, but are not durable.

They make these "golf ball launchers" that screw onto the end of an AR. They are made of a high grade steel. They're pretty cool for anyone with an imagination.

Old friend of mine in FL use to make these to order in his machine shop. He was very secretive. I only found out after he did time in a fed pen for making them.

Edit: They are apparently legal to own with the proper paper work. My friend apparently didn't have the proper paper work or even a license for that matter.

Never done it, you should post a build thread.

This should be a part of the build thread.

Its kind of funny/sad to see people that building one is illegal. Its a couple of forms to register as a manufacturer. Its not anywhere close to being illegal.

Dude.

Just pay the fee to ATF...and get one legally here in Bammer. They are legal here..and there's manufacturers here in the state.

Do you really want ATF knocking on your door? You do realize there's a large force of ATF right on Redstone Arsenal don't you?

Building one and not registering as a manufacturer, however IS illegal.

Kengel I think the op wants one "off the books"

To the op. id say its not worth the risk but its not an overly complicated device. Any machine shop or anyone with experience on a lathe can turn one out for you. Its like the baffles in a chemical truck, it just slows the escape of gasses, which is why for them to be effective you have to run sub sonic ammunition.

No offense taken.

You'd be surprised how many people don't know reality when it slaps them in the face...so you have to queue up the OBVIOUS for them.

Working for the government...it absolutely astounds me that people can't/won't understand the obvious.
