How to Die in Oregon: Death with Dignity Act allowing Doctor assisted suicide.

I recently watched this documentary, and was curious to read this board's thoughts on doctor assisted suicide, and Oregon's Death with Dignity Act. As mentioned in the title, How to Die in Oregon chronicles the stories of several people who have decided to end their life via doctor assisted suicide. This documentary in available on Netflix Instant for anyone who wants to watch it.

I'm particularly interested to hear from those who oppose this Act, and their reason why. Hopefully we'll have some good discussion and not too many personal attacks...

Some background on how the Death with Dignity Act works:
quote:

Under the law, a competent adult Oregon resident who has been diagnosed, by a physician, with a terminal illness that will kill the patient within six months may request in writing, from his or her physician, a prescription for a lethal dose of medication for the purpose of ending the patient's life. Exercise of the option under this law is voluntary and the patient must initiate the request. Any physician, pharmacist or healthcare provider who has moral objections may refuse to participate.

The request must be confirmed by two witnesses, at least one of whom is not related to the patient, is not entitled to any portion of the patient's estate, is not the patient's physician, and is not employed by a health care facility caring for the patient. After the request is made, another physician must examine the patient's medical records and confirm the diagnosis. The patient must be determined to be free of a mental condition impairing judgment. If the request is authorized, the patient must wait at least fifteen days and make a second oral request before the prescription may be written. The patient has a right to rescind the request at any time. Should either physician have concerns about the patient's ability to make an informed decision, or feel the patient's request may be motivated by depression or coercion, the patient must be referred for a psychological evaluation.

The law protects doctors from liability for providing a lethal prescription for a terminally ill, competent adult in compliance with the statute's restrictions. Participation by physicians, pharmacists, and health care providers is voluntary. The law also specifies a patient's decision to end his or her life shall not "have an effect upon a life, health, or accident insurance or annuity policy."

I've thought about this issue a lot and it's a very personal issue but I've decided I have no to very little objection to a law like this.

Freedom.

And the law seems to be well written and tries to prevent some abuses.

I've seen way too many people in pain with no chance of survival fight to the bitter end for the wrong reasons.

You have to take into account the emotional effects it has on the people that knew him/her.

The safeguards seem reasonable.

I wish it went beyond just prescribing a lethal dose and allowing a physician to administer. That's probably my only hang up. It sounds like there are plenty of safeguards there in terms of determining competency.

If it's someone's choice to do this as a consenting adult it's not my place to tell them they can't.

Yeah, this is a big factor as well in my thinking.

A law like this gives you the chance to end your suffering and pain and go out on your own terms. I can support something like that.

I understand that, but ultimately, at least IMO, it's the person suffering decision to make. In the documentary, most family members were very supportive. I'll concede, it's was a very pro-Death with Dignity documentary though.

This is already being done on a daily basis. Terminal, suffering patients are given enough morphine to suppress respiratory function so they can pass on.

But isn't that done when the dying person's death is imminent, as in within minutes? When the patient's blood pressure drops too low to create a pulse in his extremities, morphine is applied to reduce the death struggle. Isn't that correct?

That pretty much leaves me out. If I've got to go, I'd much prefer to choose how and when. Perforated with tubes and lines, lying as lax as a slab of meat as life slowly seeps out of me ... that is a horrible way to die, imo.

for anyone whose witnessed a loved one painfully fade away due to cancer, etc..., id be interested in hearing how they can oppose something like this.

i would at least want the option for myself. however, a measure like this:

quote:

Should either physician have concerns about the patient's ability to make an informed decision, or feel the patient's request may be motivated by depression or coercion, the patient must be referred for a psychological evaluation.

is essential.

A physician's job is to heal. Not help kill. There are ways for people to commit suicide if they wish to. Involving a third party should not be something the state allows.

I just thought long and hard about this again and I think a person's right to life should imply that said person has a right to death.

Yes, that is correct.

However, that's not the only time it's done.

I've had issues with this one in the past but think I'm over it. I suppose everyone should be able to go out on their own terms, in good standing with everyone.
