It's got these black spots that have developed on it. Theres another fish in the same tank and it doesn't have these spots.

It could be two things one is a Fungal spots that show up.
the second is Ammonia burn and is the most common reason for black spots on goldfish, due to water quality.

The ammonia burn sounds right. I've been busy and let the water get pretty dirty.

It's this.
Give him a proper burial in the toilet when the time comes.

My kid is going to freak out if this thing dies. It'd be the first pet that "went to live on a farm".

Goldfishville.
It's an exhibit at the worlds fair. The fish won't be able to come home to visit. It's got talent.
Seriously, my beagle is 10. I don't know how I'm gonna splain it when he dies.

To be so young, they already have a pretty good grasp on death. We've never sugar coated things too much when it came to death.

Goldfish are the worst for producing ammonia

My little one is only 9 months old but this ole boy is really attached to her and her to him.
I think he still has some miles left. I took him to go get a new collar and took this pic this morning.
Hopefully it'll be a few years before I send him to camp Coot.

This.
Goldfish need a big tank. I've always avoided them. Bettas are great fish for kids because they can breathe air from the surface and don't require as many water changes. It's still a good idea to give them several gallons with a filter and heater though.

I went out of town while in college and didn't feed my betta for 3 weeks.
Little bastard was still alive and HUNGRY when I got home.

We lost my mom lastyear and the boys were really attached to her, especially since we live next door. They've also been going to church since they were born so they know about heaven. They would still freak out.
The guy at the pet store clued me in on the high ammonia levels but I didn't know it would do that to them.
