Swinging thur Japan for 10 days on the way home from a business trip. I'll be staying in Tokyo and Kyoto with a day trip to Hiroshima. Any recommendation on restaurants and dishes in any of these places? I wanted to eat fugu but apparently wild fugu isn't in season till october or november so i may have to just try the farm raised kind.

Whatever you eat, take lots of pics and post that shite on here. Fugu would have been awesome...if you have the cash to eat it and the health to survive it. I'd be willing to bet they don't have any concept of Benihana.

Bourdain filmed a segment here... might be worth watching to get some ideas: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zUBk_w_oZmU

Zimmern also did one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VFixkI0aoYA

Kyoto

-Like beef (even raw)? Go to Isshin. I've eaten at plenty of places all over the world, and Isshin may have been my favorite meal.

-Sushi Imai was very good and pretty reasonably priced for what you get, but there was literally not a word of English spoken in there...again, literally. So that made it kind of an imtimidating atmosphere.

And on that note...Learn the work "omakase" which basically means chefs choice. It will get you out of any potential no English jam at a restaurant. A smile and "oishii" (meaning delicious) will also help lighten any situations.

-Another Kyoto recommendation is Giro Giro (or Guillo Guillo) hitoshina. It is counter style Kaiseke food and was pretty reasonably priced.

Tokyo

-For sushi, Kanesaka is very good and supposedly the most accomodating to non-Japanese speaking patrons...I know I liked it. Sushi Saito is supposed to be the best sushi in the world, but it is very hard to get a reservation at. And if you're looking to save some cash, eat lunch at a sushi restaurant - you get most of the same stuff on the dinner menu at a fraction of the price.

-Yoroniku (or yoroi niku or yoro niku - I've seen all 3 translations) serves great beef. It is cooked right at the table on a little in table grill contraption. Very good. Again, the work omakase will be your friend here too.

-If you're looking for a blow out/fancy meal, try Takazawa. It's French with a Japanese influence. Very good...very expensive.

Great tips, thanks. Any clue what it would take to get reservations at those nicer places?

If you are staying at a hotel with a concierge, that is probably your best bet. Next, I would try a credit card concierge.

Other than that, you could try e-mailing the restaurants using google to translate.

They do fried pork in Japan that is wonderful. Google "Japanese fried pork and you will find the best places for this national treasure. As recall they do three styles. Best fried pork you'll ever eat. I do not like the version that is almost totally fat.

They have a McDonalds in downtown Tokyo.

You can eat all the seaweed you could ever want. A big plate of eel livers might be worth a try. Lightly sautéed (think raw) pig heart and pig tongue are very popular. The restaurant in the Okura hotel is very cool with a Huge aquarium.
