Looking for a pressure cooker online? Get a visit from the police asking why...

quote:

Be careful what you search for. Apparently a Long Island resident's search to buy a pressure cooker online prompted three black vans and a slew of cops to knock on her door. The police demanded to search her house and grilled her husband about bomb-making.

IDAF if they were searching for gunpowder, ball bearings and c-4. The government monitoring your internet usage without a warrant and showing up at your house for no reason should scare the frick out of anyone.

Sure- their reason was that someone in the house searched for pressure cookers, and their son was looking for a new backpack for school. I guess back to school shopping didn't work out so well for them...

Yeah, they did.

Two google searches like that should not bring the FBI to your door, unless you have ties to some extreme terrorist organization.

And what if it was not an innocent family but a copycat terrorist?

Should the government do nothing?

Timothy McVeigh used a U-Haul to bomb the Oklahoma federal building, but renting a U-Haul doesn't qualify for a search of one's house.
But maybe it should, just think of the innocent children who will be killed otherwise!!!!! Terrorists!!!!

Well, obviously it should. Do you have Amy idea how many potential copycat terrorists are roaming the streets right now in U-Hauls?!?!?!!

Her "ongoing search" implies multiple searches on pressure cookers. Her son had "an insatiable appetite for the news" and was constantly searching for information about the Boston bombing. Her husband had been searching for backpacks.

Do you not see how this could be viewed another way? Would you rather the government just not do anything and trust it to chance that these people are harmless?

At this rate, that soon won't be up to you to decide what does and doesn't warrant cops beating down your door...
