I know the boards opinion on whether or not a safety harness is necessary, but has it actually saved anybodies life on here? I got one last year that has the strap that is supposed to break the threads slowly to replace the one that was just a short strap. Are these one time use kinda things or can that strap be replaced?

Not yet,
but one time a deer died because I used the strap to lean out around the tree to shoot.

Yes.

15 years ago I was offshore on a drillship and without it I would have definitely died.

Something to think about is not wearing your harness while on ATV's.

I received a safety flash on an industrial accident where a contractor was wearing a body harness while riding on a sideXside buggy. The lanyards fell from the cab of the buggy and became entangled in the tires which jerked the employee out onto the road resulting in a recordable injury.

If you have the kind with the shock absorber(folded together and lightly stitched) it is a one time use. Put a load on it and replace.

Just remember a load put on a fall protection system is much greater than the static load. If you weigh 200 pounds the force may be up to 5 times greater if you fall 5' and the lanyard stops you. I would replace the entire system if you put a dynamic load on it like this.

A good buddy of mine who posts here occasionally fell out of a tree while not wearing a harness. broke his back to pieces and almost died.

Ask him(Brushwood) if they are necessary.

Also remember if you fall and your harness stops you. You may have a tough time self rescuing. Keep your phone in your pocket or have a plan to get yourself out of a jam. Hanging face down from a rope after the shock of the fall hits you it may take a minute to get oriented as to what is going on.

No, but I know a guy in a wheelchair that would advocate their use.

I've very serious about wearing mine now and I dont even unload the 4 wheeler unless I kill something. The kind I have is the vest with the straps that go around your legs, so if I was to fall I'd be hanging right side up. I'm not sure how I'd self rescue if I fell out of my climber since there wouldn't be anything to grab onto.

I know of more people that have fallen without because in every case they were either killed or severely injured. Don't hear too much out of the ones that fell with a harness since they usually make it out without major injuries.

Does it connect to a Dee-ring in the back or front?

If in the back you will be facing at a 45 angle down. We did a drill at rope rescue training where we were hung from the back dee ring and had to self rescue. It ain't easy, and that wasn't falling that was just being slowly lowered into position. We also had very good padded harnesses on. Also after a few minutes your legs will start to go numb from hanging.

Just things to keep in mind.

This is why I set my strap up higher than I am sitting in the tree that way if I fall its only a foot or two and i should still be able to grap my climber and work my way back up.

Never fully fell out of tree but I lost my balance once 20' up and grabbed the top strap that ties to prussic knot and pulled myself back. Had I not had the harness I may have fell. Scared me enough to wear harness 100% in my climber.

back

and like another poster said, when i reach the height i want my stand in I stand up and move the strap up the tree so when I sit it has very little slack. So if if I fall I would go the max of about a foot.

Also, please use the harness when going up and down the tree. Seen to many people hurt by having it on but not strapped around the tree when climbing

My cousin had a climber break one day with him in it. He didn't have one on and it broke his leg right above his knee. It was hell getting him out of the woods that day all by myself and all I could think of was that bone causing internal bleeding. He made it through it but was laid up for about a month.

How exactly do you accomplish this?
