I'm going to get as good a price as I can get on August 13.

Excuse my ignorance, but wouldn't the share price get artificially inflated right before the ex-dividend date which will make you buy at a higher price?

Not so far - but this is the launching point for a great investment - I'm targeting it as a buy up to about $195, but it's a great, great buy where it is now - I actually bought KO a couple of weeks back, instead of V. I still might do okay on V. MMM and JNJ are just doing too well right now - I might have to wait for some emotional correction on those. V is a buy, I just have to get the funds moved over in time.

this isn't a stock purchased by dividend hunters so no, but other companies i hold like Phillip Morris pay a giant dividend so yes people buy it right before the dividend and sell

The great thing about this is that the dividend is so low right now - it doesn't matter.

I bought PM right at the ex-dividend last time and still made money - up 2%, PLUS the dividend.

That's when V went public, correct?

What the likelihood of a split?

I mean, I'm in at a minuscule 10 shares

I have LOTS of cash on hand, but don't want to tie it up, especially since I'm not the most savy investor.

I'm fairly new, too, especially single stocks, but I'm a quick learner.

What V does is act as a toll road for consumption. Now, global consumption could go down in another recession (if we're even clear of the last one), and hurt a little, but there are only about 175 million online shoppers right now - that is expected to expand to 350 to 400 million over the next 10 years and could top 1 billion in 25. Many of those people are not born yet or do not have credit cards.

The sky is the limit for V. The company makes money and does not carry consumer debt. People are already talking about a post-currency world. How do you think business will be conducted? V has the lion's share of the credit card business, and handles transactions in every currency, every language and every country on Earth.

Yes, I should get about $500 a year in PM stock just due to the dividend. Pretty nice starting out.

re: Visa getting roughed up today?

a split honestly does nothing, it just dilutes the share count. If you have 1 share at $180 or 2 shares at $90 your net worth hasn't changed. The higher price is better in my opinion bc it keeps volatility low. Look at how many shares of google are traded vs shares of coca cola($900 vs $40). You don't get these daytraders who swing in and buy 1000 shares of google and dump its 5 minutes later. At the rate Visa is growing $200 isn't really a big deal in a few months.

I know, but I thought that it will sometimes tick up quicker because people have a historical price in mind and it will tend to climb towards that point.

Not saying it would get back there, just that it would look like more of a value.

Trying to learn here

Yes, the IPO was in February (I believe) 2008 and they paid their first dividends ($0.11 in August).

Look at it this way, the dividend has tripled in 5 years. If it triples in the next 5, it will be $1 a share, quarterly, or $4 per year. If it just doubles the 5 after that, 10 years from now, your $6000 (33 shares, give or take) will be paying you about $2500 per year if you're just taking the income. If you reinvest dividends along the way, it's even more.

And we're not even buying this stock for the dividends, but for the overall growth potential.

re: Visa getting roughed up today?

Also Ace as you've pointed out global consumption could go down in another recession but honestly, Im probably gonna get flamed for this but as long as the top 10% of society are spending I think Visa will be fine the reason I say that is. If you take the entire bottom half of society and assume they spend under $300/month on their CC and compare it to everyone in the top 1% who probably spend $200k+ annually on a card, i don't think the spending habits at the top will change. Even at the peak of the crisis in 2009 you could go to the best steakhouses in dallas and houston and they were packed.

For me, I personally have a united explorer Visa card that I buy close to $200k/month on for work buying goods for my stores at sams:cigarettes, candy, drinks and I know I spent close to $2M on it this past year all work related and the fees on that alone are like $30k/year from Sams to Visa....for just me and my 4 stores. Then I don't know the breakdown per card, but I paid last year over $200k in merchant fees at work bc close to 90% of sales are on CC and visa charges 1.5%, Amex close to 3%.

So I know I'm a damn good contributor to Visa and their earnings as a consumer and as a business owner, then I see all the other business owners just like me buying goods everyday for their businesses and most wholesale places will only take visa, master, discover and pass on amex bc of the higher fees.....so with Visa being the biggest....it's my choice, their healthy balance sheet is a big bonus
