MLS tv contracts

Looks like negotiations will be starting pretty soon. A lot of things going on lately in the soccer world with tv. I can see Fox making a play again since they have rights to the World Cup and Confederations Cup after 2014. They also have the rights to all CONCACAF games. They will be needing some programing for Fox Sports 1 and a possible Fox Sports 2. NBC has the Premier League now and would they have room in their budget for MLS? Outside of MLS ESPN will have no leagues to air and do they care enough about soccer?

Best case scenario would be to use EPL matches as a lead in on NBC

That would be good for the MLS. NBC has done ok with MLS coverage. I do wish they would air more games on network tv. I wouldn't be too bothered if Fox took it away from ESPN.

I just think that if you've already got a captive audience and you come right on with an MLS match as soon as the EPL is done then after a few years everybody who likes soccer will have seen a match or two just by accident if nothing else and will realize how much better the product is now compared to just a few years ago and that's really the only way you're going to see any kind of big national growth. People aren't watching not because they aren't interested but because they think it's a bad league but in reality it's really no worse than what you see in the nPower Championship at this point. You need people to just give it a chance and IMO that's by far the best way to do it.

I agree.

What I hope happens is that all three networks come to an agreement and can all televise games on Saturdays. It would be great if there were at least three MLS games on TV each weekend. Maybe NBC/SN can televise a mid-day game (maybe 2:30 ET), right after the PL games are over. Then ESPN gets a late afternoon time slot (5:30 ET) and then FOX gets the night time slot (9 ET), or something to that effect. Then maybe they could rotate in televising Sunday and midweek games.

Idk though, during college football season I'm not sure how much ESPN would want to show an MLS game when they could be showing a match on ESPN2 in the afternoon, even if it is 2 teams from the Big East or something. I dunno, Maybe when the SEC Network comes out it would help free up that time slot.

I was thinking about this today. I think one problem is that the national tv games are on at different times and different days every week. ESPN tends to show their games on Sunday but the NBCSN game is sometimes on Friday night, Saturday afternoon, Saturday night, or Sunday afternoon. I think ESPN will still keep MLS because it's tied to the USMNT and they get to air the qualifiers and most of the friendlies. NBC gets the second half of Nascar in 2015 so that hurts MLS a little bit IMO. I can see Fox in the cards since they have FS1 and FS2 and likely needs more programing. Also, heard beIn could be in the cards. I hope not though since it's a premium channel and won't help the growth much.

I agree. I wish there was a way to do this but the only way I see it being possible is to either have it on NBC Sports Network (since they don't do much college football) or to move it to Sundays and compete with the NFL during football season. I know during football season, there is usually an MLS match on ESPN2 on Sunday nights but it obviously doesn't seem like something you can count on each and every week. I don't get FS2 at the moment so I would worry about that but I do get beIN Sport so I wouldn't mind that. :selfish:

Some of the NBC games have been pretty bad matchups as well.

It seems like they schedule all the matches before the season starts. I wish they could be able to wait until two or three weeks earlier to pick which ones would be on TV.

Who knows if they wouldn't continue to pick the same bad matchups, though.

Just thought of something else. I figure a lot of people are dropping Fox Soccer Plus right now. What if Fox came in and said we will air a game every week on FS1 or FS2 and then air some of the lesser matchups on Plus. I think the announcement NYCFC in 2015 and getting Dempsey back was very convenient for the tv deals.

Convenient, no.

Well planned by MLS, yes.
