Your numbers were realistic. Bunch of tight asses up in here.

I'll give you that. It depends on if you water in the summer and if you have gas for heat in the winter. And the energy was a guess. I have a 1700 sq ft home and the most I have ever paid is $140. But I'm not in a 250k house either. So I guess that an extra 700-1000 sq ft would add about $100.

You mentioned the 250k mortgage and nice car.

Im not talking about the mortgage and car note... I'm talking about the other numbers.

What is out of line in the other numbers then?

Okay. Change those to what you think is reasonable and let's see if you have "a few thousand" to spend like you seemed to think.

TV/internet = $0 included service from condo association
Water/Gas = $0 (same)
Energy = $20/month (high rise condo building temp kept at 72 degrees)

what is the rent in this place where they cover all of your utilities and only charge you $20/month for electricity?

100k Salary with 70k at total after taxes (Which I really think it would be more like 75-80 after your itemized deductions, but we'll go with 70k)... Thats is $5833 a month to spend. I'll use your numbers and bold the ones I change

Mortage + Escrow: 1500
Car: 450
TV/Internet: 100
Water/Gas: 75
Energy: 150 Average for yr and that may be high
Security System: 45
Gasoline: 250
Groceries: 300
Car ins in LA: 200
Student Loans: 200 Thats around 30k in loans
Cell Phone: 80

That totals up to $3350

$5833 - $3350 = $2483

Lets say 1k of that goes into Roth/401k

You still have $1483 a month for other things. That is not bad off in any way whatsoever.

You forgot health/life insurance premiums or HSA contributions. And what was it I said in my original post? Just over 1k? Glad we agree.

I would agree with a 100k salary translating to around ~1k of extra $ per month. The number can fluctuate depending on the month and how frugal you live obviously.

I was about to give you the nod and say that you were correct, but I decided to go back and see what I originally said. Nice play on switching my words.

What I originally said

quote:

That easily affords you a 250k mortgage, a nice car, spending money, and putting away a few thousand a month.

Then what you claimed I said

quote:

see if you have "a few thousand" to spend like you seemed to think.

So in my scenario that I last gave... I already put away 1k. Would not be hard to find another 1k to "Put away" like I claimed.

Lower car note as I think $450 is way more than a nice car. Or no student loans as most La residents took advantage of Tops.

Could easily get another 2-300 right there.

Add in eating out and entertainment, clothes, and a few other things a month and you're lucky to actually put $500/month in savings....enough for one nice vacation a year.

It's awful easy to look at $100k on paper and think you can't spend it all up, but it goes much faster and easier than you think...

I don't pay $200 for me and my wife in LA, I don't even think it's $150

I remember you separating the "spending" and "putting away". I didn't look back at the post. Either one is 1k. I wasn't trying to play with words.

Many people would consider that "well off". Its all relative.

Just busting your balls bro... I admit, you were closer to being right than I was

But I honestly don't feel sorry for a single person making 100k that cannot budget themselves to put away a large chunk of money.

I saw your wife drives an '06 cherokee. This would be for a nice/new car worth 40k. But we're starting to split hairs now.

We play $250 a month, both with clean driving records but this is Orleans parish. I also think the TV/internet is low. I have the second lowest Direct TV tier with no premium channels and the second highest cox tier to stream netflix. That adds up to about $170/month.

Absolutely not. We were talking about a single person in his/her late 20's. No one is suggesting that person isn't making it out pretty good. But if you want nice/new things: house, car, decent ins. coverage, it adds up like a bitch.

Exactly...but you won't end up saving a ton of money either.

We spend too much money eating out - that's where we piss away a lot of it. But then again, I work out of country most of the time so when I'm home I don't mind eating at several different places in the short time I'm home!
