I happened to drive be cafe americain last night and realized I had not been there in probably 10 years. How is this place now? I'm planning on going next weekend. Any recommendations?

It was pretty good around 1985. How it stays afloat is beyond me. I had lunch there about 6 months ago and it was pretty full. I only had like a chicken Caesar salad or something. Not horrible but...

I could practically throw a rock from where I live and hit it, but have never been. Every time I drive by, it just looks... Sad...

Because in 1987ish, it was not a dated menu, it was more somewhat Mike Anderson and Drusilla-esque derrivative, before many more options hit BR. Now, a trip to Parrain's,etc..is a no-brainer.

CA on Lobdell was a nice conversion of the old music studio/bar into a neighborhood bar for Tara, Goodwood, and Jefferson Hwy locals, Brocato's Salon was still in there..Smokie had a decent lil' run with a George's where the Animal Hospital now sits too in late '80s/early '90s.

The Cafe Americain on Coursey at Jones Creek also had a great run when the theatre next door was fresh and new, with a trendy new Marble Slab next door also. Now that corridor has a City Cafe and George's, which weren't there then..and a much nicer theatre down the road around the block.

Andre Agassi sported a mullet while on the tube over the bar area when CA-Goodwood was fresh and new..times change!

I went there about a year ago with a group, expecting the usual mediocrity. I got served one of the best prime ribs I ever wrapped a tooth around.

Great to hear, love a great prime rib.

They used to do a great fried eggplant, twice baked potato,etc..good food at a decent price.

I have been going there for 15 years - Lunch has been up and down, but usually decent. Dinner, however, is terrible.

DO NOT go for dinner!

Right.

Because nothing screams 2013 cuisine like Parrain's in Baton Rouge.

Didn't realize that CA Lobdell was still open. Was it named CA back in the day when Buckskin used to drink there?

The jones creek location was my first "real" job back in high school 7 years ago. I was sad when that one closed down. We went for dinner a few weeks ago, the day after the 4th and had a pretty good meal. As always, the portions were still huge. I got blackened chicken pasta which was good, not great: the chicken was a little dry.

It was John Mahaffey's watering hole in the mid to late 80's.

Never implied Parrain's screams modern cuisine, Jose Andres molecular gastronomy,etc..

Just implied that of the BR Batterhouse fried genre, Parrain's has far left behind 1980s stalwarts like Drusilla and Mike Anderson's in the dust.

Has a quality level and consistency that neither ever had, not even in their heydays.

Surely you've been to Parrains before?

I like most anything there. Their Gumbo is solid(darker and spicier than say Don's), Charbroiled Oysters, Tabasco Mustard Catfish dish on Fridays is my fav(also love the string beans and potato salad accompanying it), peanut cole slaw, BBQ Drum, Blackened Shrimp Remoulade, Eggplant Pontchartrain, Andouille Encrusted Fish, Vermillion, Delacroix, Whole Shebang, etc..all solid.
