Despite earning over $700,000 and establishing himself as one of the top running backs in the NFL last season, Washington Redskins running back Alfred Morris has no plans to get rid of the 1991 Mazda 626 that he drove from Florida to Virginia for his first NFL training camp last summer.

“Actually, Mazda has her," Morris said from Redskins training camp on Thursday. "She’s getting refurb – Mazda is going to make her like new, like she came off the floor on ‘91. They actually just took it, so we’re going to switch cars while they’re doing it. They said it would take about 6–8 weeks to do it, but they’re going to totally refurbish it, so I’m happy about that… They’re just (refurbishing) it so that it can run for about 20 more years."

I really like this guy. It's refreshing to hear about an NFL player that gives all appearances of being a practical, down to Earth, regular guy.

Question. How much would it cost to get his 1991 Mazda 626 completely refurbished, considering that the car is almost 20 years old and the parts (I'm assuming) aren't readily available and thus (I'm assuming again) not cheap? Would it be cheaper (and more practical and down to earth) to just buy another Mazda?

I assumed Mazda was doing it at no cost to him.

I'd refurbish my old '94 F150 flare side if I had the choice over a new car.

Why would they do that?

I would buy a refurbished '94 F150 over most new cars.

Advertising and publicity. We're talking about Mazda, aren't we?

I doubt refurbing a car for the only NFL player that drives your brand won't hurt the bottom line.

And they're essentially repaying him for the publicity of constantly talking about his 20-year-old Mazda that still works.

Morris may be the only player in NFL history to drive a Mada while receiving a NFL check.

I'm not saying they aren't doing it at no cost to him. But I am guessing that it would cost a lot.

Even if it does, he's still choosing to drive a 1991 Mazda over a 2014 Mercedes. He isn't trying to flaunt his money or show off.

It's going to be a national scandal when someone discovers he has a garage full of Bentlys and Mercedes.

The point I was trying to make is that I'm wondering if completely refurbing his ancient car would be more expensive than just buying a new Benz. I have no idea, I was just wondering.
