re: San Diego Chargers: the dynasty that almost was

Merrimann played one year, his rookie year with brees. You understand players get better, and with VJ that was certainly the case. Yes, a top LT on a team structured like that is worth quite a bit. He was a pro bowl LT in his rookie season. NTM, it's not like Drew wouldn't have improved. Keep tarding it up. You had to look all that up, I remember it. You trapped yourself with you'r own stupidity just assuming 9-7 to 14-2 was all rivers. Just admit that it was a better team.

I don't even need to defend it. Drew is going to the hall. Rivers is barely an average QB.

It is retarded to say they fricked up letting Brees go when the team was way better without him. Yeah the overall team improved and Rivers was one of the major reasons why.

No it's not. It's quantifiable that they fricked up. I don't necessarily blame them for the decision. 9/10 times that's the right choice, but facts remain facts.

This doesn't even factor in the caliber of player San Diego could have gotten back for Rivers in a trade at that time instead of letting Brees go for nothing.

It would have been interesting to see what they would have done if Brees doesn't go down.

Or the diminishing quality of their division. Herm Edwards took over KC in 06, mcdaniels fiasco in 07, and Oakland is still an eternal dumpster fire.

A smart GM would trade rivers in that scenario. Then again, we're talking about AJ Smith.

Okay, this is hindsight and unfair.

Brees was trending upwards in his contract year with a 1st round pick breathing down his neck, yes, but he also blew out his shoulder that year so the decison was made for them. 32 out of 32 teams would have made the exact same decision.

Its like me saying the Patriots should have drafted a TE last year because of the Aaron Hernandez situation.

I'm speaking after the fact. I don't think he was a failure as a GM because he traded brees. I just think had he kept him and brees still performed at a high level, he would still push for rivers to start.

Let me take a second. Rivers over brees was a smart decision, it turned out to be the wrong one, but that's life.

You're forgetting Merriman

they had a pretty good nose tackle too, Jamal Williams.

Donnie Edwards was pretty good ILB.

Antonio Cromartie had the beast of a season in 2007 when he had 10 interceptions. That was the year where they made it all the way to the AFC Championship.

The Year San Diego had the first pick and Eli/Rivers were drafted...Robert Gallery#2, Larry Fitzgerald#3

2003 SD Wide Receivers were

David Boston 880 yards
Eric Parker 244 yards
Reche Caldwell 80 yards
Tim Dwight 193 yards
Kassim Osgood 278 yards

So they select Larry Fitzgerald 2004 because of their lack of talent at WR

how many superbowls now?

Brees was awesome before he was let go. Period. He was trending upwards.

No he wasn't. He had a terrible year in 03, a really good year in 04 and then a solid year in 05 that ended with a torn labrum. If I recall right, they still offered him a large contract, it just didn't have enough guaranteed money.

Oh and Vincent Jackson didn't do anything in the NFL until long after Bress left

So Vincent Jackson didn't do anything in the 8 games he played as a rookie with Brees? Are you really using this as some kind of indictment of Brees? Because that's retarded even for you.

Cough, wrong.

Josh McDaniels didn't get hired until after the 2008 season, when the Denver Broncos dropped their last 3 games to miss the playoffs and finish 8-8. Pat Bowlen then fired Mike Shanahan in favor of that fricking retarded imbecile, Josh McDaniels. After starting 6-0 in 2009, the Denver Broncos went on to lose 20 out of their next 26 games.

Aside from his 2004 season in San Diego, Drew Brees was a middle of the road quarterback, and pretty mediocre.

80 passing touchdowns and 53 interceptions during his career with the Chargers.

He fired Martyball after he went 14-2 to hire Norv Turner.

This is what really doesn't make any sense to me. Why? The team is obviously so close to winning it all. All that is needed is a lucky bounce or two and a little extra push. It wasn't the time to get rid of the head coach at all.

I could see them wanting to move away from Marty because he made a career out ot great regular seasons and then duding out in the playoffs, i dont agree but its not really something to fuss about

The retarded part was replacing him with Marty Jr (Norv). It was a lateral move for no reason at all.
